1  Journey by Journey / London to the Cotswolds / Re: Cotswold Line - 2018 cancellation and amendments log on: November 13, 2018, 09:21:26 am
Yesterday (12 November) the 13:22 Paddington to Worcester Foregate Street train departed Paddington 9 minutes late due to crew being delayed on an earlier service. This service lost further time & was 16 late at Evesham. Sometimes in such circumstances it's held there, & subsequently terminated at Worcester Shrub Hill, to let the 15:22 WOS:PAD service on to the single track first. Yesterday was not such a case.

The result was significant delays on the following three London bound services: the 15:22 WOS:PAD ran non-stop from Oxford and arrived at Paddington 30 minutes late; the 15:51 WOF:PAD arrived at Paddington 25 late and the 15:14 Hereford to Paddington 19 late.

On the other hand, the planners did ensure that the down services were largely unaffected, even running the 15:50 Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh through to the Cotswolds.

Maybe there's a better place to mention this but a couple of short-formations this morning that didn't appear on JourneyCheck.

The 05:28 Hereford to Paddington and 07:10 Moreton-in-Marsh to Paddington both five coach IETs instead of the usual nine.

Certainly five coaches on the 07:10 are more than enough for the Cotswold Line part of the journey but it did seem that capacity would have struggled beyond Oxford.

The 07:10 MIM:PAD won't be getting you to London yet again!

07:10 Moreton-in-Marsh to London Paddington due 08:51 will be terminated at Reading.
It will no longer call at London Paddington.
This is due to a fault on this train.
Will be formed of 2 coaches instead of 8. First class not available.

As always, as soon as the autumn leaf fall begins, so does the dive in GWR performance and reliability along the Cotswold Line.

Most of the delays and cancellations have been unrelated to leaf fall so far - just the usual incompetances we've come to expect in the last year or so.  I am expecting a much better leaf fall season than normal on this particular route as it has been blitzed over the last year with vegetation and tree removals at many locations along the route, despite attempts from some to stop Network Rail from doing so.  This time last year it was like a jungle, so much overdue.

That's not to say it will be perfect though as I'm sure there will still be some delays, and still a few locations where the vegetation has yet to be tackled, but hopefully HSTs stalling on Campden Bank and such like will now be prevented.

Possibly not the best analogy to have used! I didn't mean to directly link leaf fall with the service going to pot as I know a lot of work has gone on to address that particular problem. However, the level of service does seem to nose dive at this time of year and 2018 seems to be no exception, albeit due to over-running engineering works, track defects, test trains pulling down overhead lines etc. However, a number of HSTs have reappeared on some morning services in recent weeks so maybe there will be a Campden Bank swansong to look forward to...

It will no longer call at Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury and Hanborough.
This is due to this train being late from the depot.

Helpfully, National Rail Enquires said this service was only running from Moreton-in-Marsh to Oxford, finally correcting itself shortly after 07:30!

The overhead wire problems at Paddington are affecting the whole GWR network but, for the record, the impact on this morning's Cotswold Line peak is:

05:11 WOS:PAD "was cancelled throughout due to a problem with the overhead line power collection equipment (M1)"

06:52 London Paddington to Great Malvern due 09:37 was started from Reading.

07:10 Moreton-in-Marsh to London Paddington due 08:51 will be cancelled.
This is due to damage to the overhead electric wires.

I was a little surprised the 06:19 WOS:PAD (which I think usually starts from Hereford at 05:28) didn't stop additionally at Kingham bearing in mind the earlier cancellations.

Delays to services between London Paddington and Slough

Due to damage to the overhead electric wires between London Paddington and Slough some lines are blocked.

Train services running to and from these stations may be delayed. Disruption is expected until 22:00 16/10.

Some services showing as "delayed" at the moment including the 19:22 Paddington to Hereford train which is stuck between Paddington and Slough and at least 30 minutes late as I write.

Update... a touch more serious it seems:

The 05:28 HFD:PAD started this morning from WOS, and is currently around 20 minutes late and running direct from MIM to OXF to try to make up some time. It's an HST rather than IET9.

Which is delaying the 07:10 MIM:PAD which is the service Charlbury and Hanborough passengers will now have to catch.

And earlier the 05:11 WOS:PAD  was cancelled due to a broken down train.

Later edit - the 07:10 MIM:PAD arrived at Hanborough 20 minutes late. Given the lateness of the decision to run the 05:28 HFD:PAD fast from MIM to Oxford, customers for the cancelled service at Hanborough were waiting for almost 40 minutes in the drizzle. At least yesterday the 07:10 was able to run ahead of the 05:28.

and consequently the 06:53 WOF:DID was terminated at Oxford for the second day running, arriving just over half an hour late.

The 16:22 PAD:GMV (which I'm guessing forms the above) didn't make it beyond Reading:

This service was cancelled between Reading and Great Malvern due to a problem with the brakes (MN).

And after some big delays this morning - both the 0528 HFD:PAD & 0623 WOF:DID (which terminated at Oxford) over 30 minutes late off the Cotswold Line - and the total wipe-out of Friday's peak down service from Oxford, we have the first signs of another GWR autumn "service"!
