Useful link for those who don't just book on GWR (Great Western Railway) as this page on NRE(resolve) shows all the TOCs (Train Operating Company).

There was a fatality last night, your train would've lost power when the power to the 3rd rail was switched off. When the train loses power on board facilities do stop working as only so long the trains battery can handle on board services. As for your other experiences, couldn't say, be worth sending an email to Southern.

All but the very smallest and simplest public buildings are required to have emergency lighting that operates for three hours in case of power failure.
Yet on trains this seems to be optional or a low priority.

I can't speak for all train types, but certainly with the newer models I'm familiar with, there is lighting that will stay on, but you're looking at about an hour, or 2 - possibly longer with intervention to try and reduce load on the batteries. Control teams are well aware of limitations in this respect though for stranded trains and would take it into account when making decisions in regards to arranging evacuation or train to train rescues.

May I ask what the dismissal was for?

I've not been able to find that part yet. If I do, I shall update.

In practical terms, what will that mean for services between Reading- Plymouth/Penzance on those dates?

I have a journey which I need to make as a mercy mission on the 7th, I had considered making it by train but it sounds like I may need to consider my options.

Thanks for any advice

Probably a bit early to say, RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) gave the dates yesterday, so it'll be for Network Rail to now work out what desks in TVSC» (Thames Valley Signalling Centre - about) they think they can cover and for how long.

Not related to the pay dispute, however is an RMT (National Union of Rail, Maritime & Transport Workers) strike, so...

RMT has instructed all its members employed as Crossing Keepers, Electrical Control Room Operators, Shift Signaller Managers and Signallers at Didcot Thames Valley Signalling Centre to not book on for any shifts that commence between:

00:01 to 23:59 hours on Saturday 5th November 2022
00:01 to 23:59 hours on Monday 7th November 2022

This dispute is in relation to the dismissal of a signaller.
21  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Infrastructure problems in Thames Valley causing disruption elsewhere - ongoing, since Oct 2014 on: September 24, 2022, 02:13:23
Whether it was infrastructure or train caused the initial damage on Monday, the damaged pantograph involved looks like has cause damage elsewhere

Have all three incidents occured on the up relief? Or is there a suggestion that one errant set has been out and about damaging OLE (Overhead Line Equipment, more often "OHLE") wherever it goes, but continuing in service because it's not been identified as the culprit?

No.
If the speculation is correct in that it was the 345 on Monday, then it was on the Down Relief, although other adjacent lines had damage.
Wednesday was the Down Main and then tonight was the Up Relief.

Think it'd be good if the sleeper were to be allowed to run through to Paddington with delay so long as block is lifted on time, but I guess it depends on how work progresses during the night.
23  Journey by Journey / North Downs Line / Re: "Person hit by train" - shortage of trains after? on: September 20, 2022, 06:09:01
There was a person hit by a train yesterday and it was a turbo involved, so my guess would be that it relates to that but couldn't say for certain.

Just to mention that the Guardian’s take on this is that he was fired by FirstGroup

The headline does, but then the article states he has decided to stand down.

It's an ill wind ... Q: What can you do on a strike day more easily than a normal one? A: drag an IET (Intercity Express Train) with a seized axle from Reading to North Pole very slowly. Very, very, very, slowly.

At 5mph I expect.  As you say, such moves are normally carried out in the dead of night, but the 'dead of day' today is nearly as good!

In average speed, well under 5 mph! It just got in, having taken over 9 hours.

The planned path involved crossing to Line 3 at Ladbroke Grove, then to Line 1 to enter Royal Oak Sidings to reverse. In the end it reversed in Line 3, saving nearly an hour. I'm guessing there was a loco each end, rather than running round and un/coupling in Line 3, even today.

It's notable how much of the journey can be done in loops and sidings, even if it skipped the "No 1 Loop" at Hanwell/West Ealing (Plassers).
No loco required, it ran under its own power.
26  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Signalling staff being taken ill. on: March 26, 2022, 19:33:01
As well as the usual crew shortages, there are a number of cancellations and short runs today due to signalling staff being ill - I noted some of today's cancellations being listed last night.

I assume that this is COVID related and seems to mostly affect Thames Valley services and branch lines - would be interesting to know (roughly) how many signalling staff are usually required to maintain the service and how many have been affected.

Hope they all get well soon!

Hard to pinpoint but with west of England diversions and cancellations between Newbury and Bedwyn my guess would be lack of staff to run the crossing box at Kintbury.

It was a shortage of staff at TVSC» (Thames Valley Signalling Centre - about), has meant that some desks had a period of time with no cover resulting in temporary closure of the area that desk covers.
27  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Platform closure at West Ealing on: March 20, 2022, 15:01:23
What is puzzling is 2G02, the Greenford unit going out in the morning from Paddington. This was cancelled, with reason code XO (Crossover. Pair of points that connects two parallel rail lines. Crossovers can be either facing or trailing dependent on direction of travel) - the fuller listing on Liverail is:
Quote
19/03/22 05:04:03 Cancelled at Paddington XO [External trees, building or objects encroaching onto Network Rail infrastructure (not due to weather or vandalism)] AT ORIGIN

It went out half an hour later as 2G04, VSTP'd to start at Paddington. In this case Liverail has got itself confused, showing 2G04 twice with the original one cancelled and reinstated at West Ealing and both running with the same timings.

That reason does look like it has to be about that wall, but why lose the first service? Maybe engineering use of the bay? I don't see any added train ID for that.

It's because the relief lines were closed, so the unit had to wait at Paddington until it would be able to access the Greenford branch.
28  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Platform closure at West Ealing on: March 19, 2022, 13:25:44
Live Departures still shows that West Ealing is being skipped on London bound services, so guessing they're not quite finished with their work to make it safe yet.

(GWR (Great Western Railway) have switched off replies to their Twitter feed, so no more advice from that channel other than their own updates)
That's not what that means, this is a feature that Twitter have introduced which I like (although I don't use Twitter often any longer). It means a Twitter thread can be looked at and will only contain updates from GWR (or any others that GWR choose to allow to respond to that tweet)

People can still tweet @GWRHelp as usual and should expect a response in the usual way. It's just the disruption tweet that can't be replied to. You have to start your own Twitter thread.
