1  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: If not HS2 to Manchester, how will traffic be carried? on: March 23, 2024, 11:35:05
Andrew Haines has pointed out to HMG the cancelling of the northern section of HS2 (The next High Speed line(s)) will place excessive pressure on the WCML (West Coast Main Line) north of  Handsacre Junction, due to HS2 trains being much shorter than the pendolinos as such twice as many trains will need to be run!!

Network Rail does not have any CP7 funding to accommodate this because all of the capacity increase was being funded by HS2

Its going to be a mess

You know it was a mistake to cancel the Northern section when you got the mayors from both large political parties joining forces to campaign.

Plus you've got pro motoring lobbies themselves admitting that yes its nice for more money to fix portholes however the money probably won't be available for another few years.
SO it is pointless and if a lot of long distance services can't be taken off the west coast mainline its going to mean more lorries on the M1, M6 etc causing more congestion and road damage   how often do we hear the AA etc admit things like this. Let's hope the private sector and investors will jump in to help fund the mayors alternative northern link.to HS2

Had this given to me shows the plans for callanghan Square.  Platforms will be in.the car park on.the South Side of Cardiff Central Station. A multistorey car park is being built along with a coach station.
3  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Vivarail chosen for fast charging trial on the Greenford branch on: February 23, 2024, 22:49:37
I'd imagine that GWR (Great Western Railway) have a plan to use the battery electrics for Henley/Marlow/Windsor and perhaps Basingstoke branches where they can be maintained in Reading, but will play it safe before they go public.

As for further west, seems more likely that GWR will muddle through until Project Churchward replaces the DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) rolling-stock en-masse.

Class 175s are supposed to be coming.ing to GWR.

Plan was 2 carriage 175s on Okehampton, 3 carriage 175s on Barnstaple with 2 and 3 carriages working together on  penzance to Plymouth  and Exeter services allowing last castle hsts to go as well as freeing up class 150/2's for Devon.and Cornwall metro and 158s to boost the Cardiff to Portsmouth hbr service

As you suggest, electrifying Filton Bank would cover half the route from Temple Meads to Henbury. That suggests the use of battery-electric trains could be the way to go on this line. But if WECA» (West of England Combined Authority - about)'s 'Branch Line Study' has a positive outcome, we'll be looking at 3tph to Avonmouth and 2tph to Henbury. Would that justify full OHLE?

I thought about that too, but the type of kit in use is not something designed to draw power from a 25 kV supply. Modifications to Vivarail's idea would probably bump up the cost to more than that of wiring up Henbury, if the cost can be brought down to £1.5 million per track kilometre as Mayor Dan said. Portishead would be another electric kettle of fish though. My guess is that there will be a lot of diesel miles under wires for a long time to come. If, however, electricity does finally come to Avonmouth and Severn Beach, and if there's a bit more dualling of track, would there be a case for having more than 3 tph/2 tph on the branches? That would be cart first in the usual way of doing, but having pure electrics all around Bristol would make it look like a real Metro in a way that diesels can't match.

The crosscity line in Birmingham is a good example to look at. Could even copy what us Welsh are doing on the valley lines. With electric/battery powered trains. GWR (Great Western Railway) having a fleet of flirts with level boarding now that be great for the city

Theres a lot of eyes watching this trial.all going to plan batterybtrains could appear on a few of GWR (Great Western Railway)'s branch lines.....

I'm wondering if any of those are with Metrowest in mind.

I think it could go on Severn beach services if it just shuttled between Bristol TM(resolve) and Severn Beach etc.

Certainly the figures from today have surprised everyone unit did the trip just using 45% of the  charge on the batteries the engineers saying it could have done 120 miles between charges. Well have to see how it performs on tje Greenford branch now. No doubt all going to plan well see more 230s on the other branches in the Thames Valley  possibly other areas too.

Wont be surprised to see other TOCs (Train Operating Company) consider it

230001 to make its way to Reading on Friday 16th February.  Testing showing its managing 70 miles before needing charging although batteries Re still said to have plenty of energy lefy

230001 is now out testing on the mainline. Hopefully won't be too long before it moves to Reading.

It looks good, but will they have the stock. 150s might be available from Wales because 2 car trains between Truro/Par and Newquay might not be enough.

Will they make the loop as long as possible so it becomes dynamic and the trains do not have to stop?

We been told TFW to start sending class 150s off lease from August but it will be as units come up for major examples.

This will depend though znd how the rollout of the class 756s on the valley lines goes and further introduction of the class 197s
11  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Ebbw Vale Town - improvements on: January 31, 2024, 11:55:55
The day ranger should have the same route validity as the corresponding walk up tickets within the area of validity.

In practice I suspect you'd have no problem taking a service via Newport using the day ranger when there is no alternative journey. A word with the guard before boarding should allow travel. It'd be a very hard hearted guard who'd either strand you in Ebbw Vale or demand another fare.

I've asked  a tfw guard i know and as long as you board the train.before Newport your day rover will be valid. Its the case as there's been times when trains have been diverted to Newport  when.theres engineering work going on.

They are going to add Newport to the valleyines day rover but it won't be done until the metro is up and running  and it will only be valid on tfw services.

Theres a campaign in the Ebbw Valley against stopping the Ebbw Vale to Cardiff trains at Cardiff parkway due to the increased journey times.  There is a bit of slack in.the timetable between Cardiff abd Pye corner so could possibly be enough time to add a stop .
12  All across the Great Western territory / Looking forward - after Coronavirus to 2045 / Re: Project Churchward - Future regional fleet for the west on: December 20, 2023, 23:50:20
I've heard talk of wires to Bristol TM(resolve) via both Filton and Bath along with wires to Swansea.
A tri-mode 5 carriage unit be ideal for Cardiff to Portsmouth hbr and even Cardiff to penzance.  Heard other electric islands were being looked at

I heard they were trying to get wires from Swindon to Severn tunnel junction and Westerleigh jct too.

A few of you may know GWR (Great Western Railway) been looking for ways to replace the entire dmu fleet as well.as possibly emus in the Thames valley.

GWRS MD has been quite vocal about particularly about getting Bristol TM(resolve) wired to GWR could use a emu fitted with batteries on the Cardiff to Portsmouth hbr service.

Other UK (United Kingdom) TOCs (Train Operating Company) especially northern and chiltern are struggling to get replacement parts for the BR (British Rail(ways)) dmus.

The DFT (Department for Transport) have now put a tenders out for replacement units including for GWR.

Looks like they are looking at units with 24m carriages  for  GWR hopefully 5 carriage units for the Portsmouth hbr service.

I doubt very much it would be Hitachi that would get the contract. My money is probably on Alstom or STadler
14  Journey by Journey / TransWilts line / Re: Go-Op Cooperative - update on: December 19, 2023, 20:35:52
Probably 350/2's then I suspect as porternrook trying to get some fitted with batteries
15  Journey by Journey / Wales local journeys / Re: Cardiff Bay Station branch on: December 17, 2023, 16:45:56
Big changes being consulted on for the valley lines next summer.

All aberdare and merthyr services will loop clockwise or anticlockwise around the city centre via Radyr- Cathays -Central -Ninian Park-radyr and back up the valleys.

In addition all services from Rhymney  and Bargoed will run to Barry Island and Bridgend via VOG.

The Penarth branch will be served by a 2tph from Coryton abd a 2tph service to Caerphilly.

This gives 6tph between Cardiff and Caerphilly compared to 4tph now.

Cardiff  Bay line gets 4tph to queen Street  shuttle as well as a 2tph service to Pontypridd.  So Cathays to pontypridd still gets 6tph. Cardiff to pontypridd will increase from 5-6,tph to 8tph.

The cityline gains a Sunday service too so now only the Coryton branch has no trains on sundays
