16  Journey by Journey / South Western services / Re: Car Parking, APCOA (in this case, Oriental Road, Woking) - a cautionary tale on: January 30, 2024, 12:23:58
Came across an interesting one this morning while meeting for coffee in Bridport. Someone had received a penalty notice for overstaying at Morrisons. They had got the local MP (Member of Parliament) to help look into it.
It seems that the car park is run by Euro Car Parks. Shoppers can use it free of charge for visiting the store with a two hour limit and no return for three hours.
However Euro Car Parks have an alternative for non shoppers with 50p per hour increments to a maximum of £2.00 for 24 hours. This is pay by phone only or by app. It is not advertised as far as I can see and I only came across it by chance on the Parkopedia website and the app by searching the Euro Car Park site.
Any challenge to a penalty notice need the Morrisons receipt as evidence.
I would think that very few know the rules in this car park!

Cl 73s provided the traction as there is still work to be done.
The photo, by Peter Spokes who is restoring other SR(resolve) EMUs (Electric Multiple Unit), was taken from X/Twitter and includes Gordon Pettitt himself and Chris Green among the others.

(Peter Sookes is restoring other SR EMUs in deepest East Kent where there is a South Central VOP and a SWT (South West Trains) 139x CIG just... waiting)

It is worth reading the reviews on the Apple app store. A number had the same problem.
We have to park in Yeovil and i have to remember to take cash as the app/phone based parking has reviews which mean I would not wish to use it.

The onset of winter conditions has seen the early trains having problems.
Yesterday, Jan18, saw two of the first three up trains from Weymouth cancelled as well as the first down service.
Today it was the turn of the early up service from Yeovil as the ecs from Bristol to Yeovil ran 90mins late into Westbury where it formed the Filton Abbey service. Then the 07.33 Weymouth to Gloucester failed at Weymouth, running ecs towards Bristol.
Add that to the experience of a couple of friends travelling for a day out in Bath makes one question travelling until more reliability is seen.
09.31 GWR (Great Western Railway) Journey check announces
Cancellations to services between Yeovil Pen Mill and Weymouth
Due to a fault with the signalling system between Yeovil Pen Mill and Weymouth all lines are blocked.

Meanwhile on SWR» (South Western Railway - about) Journey Check

Alterations to services between Castle Cary and Yeovil Pen Mill
Due to a speed restriction over defective track between Castle Cary and Yeovil Pen Mill trains have to run at reduced speed on all lines.

Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 11:00 19/01.

27  Journey by Journey / London to South Wales / Re: Flooding, again, between Swindon and Bristol Parkway - 31.12.2023 on: January 07, 2024, 16:32:19
Apparently, the lagoon installed in 2018 to take the overflow water is full but, after so much rain has fallen,  NR» (Network Rail - home page) cannot release the water for fear of flooding nearby properties.

Quote
The lagoon was installed in 2018 as part of a flood alleviation scheme designed to improve the resilience of the railway line, which had been prone to flooding.
Network Rail said it does not want to let the water out of the lagoon as they are concerned it could flood nearby properties.
Julie Gregory from Network Rail said the "prolonged and relentless period of rainfall" meant they could not safely empty it to reduce water on the tracks.
"In 2018 we invested £5m in a railway resilience scheme where we installed a large lagoon which has a capacity of 11 million litres," she said.
“It holds the water, reduces the amount of time the line is closed and in some cases prevents it closing altogether.
"With climate change we know that this sort of event is going to happen more frequently, so one of the a number of different potential options that we're looking at is a bigger lagoon.
"We're working with the Environment Agency and others to look at what our options are to protect the resilience of this railway line into the future."

30  Journey by Journey / Heart of Wessex / A reliable service? on: January 01, 2024, 09:48:10
Today sees three of the first four up trains cancelled due to a lack of crew. Looking at RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) over the past few months it is noticeable that it is not uncommon for one of the first three services to be cancelled.
A trip to Bristol these days is probably easier via Crewkerne and SWR» (South Western Railway - about). Here the ticket is valid in either direction and thus gives you a half hourly choice! The downside is an increase in cost.

22.34 A total of SEVEN services cancelled due to shortage of crew, with another one reinstated and running 50 minutes late..
