1  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Peak time Barnstaple services to be extended to/from Axminster? on: March 20, 2022, 19:54:29
This train is only replacing the SWR» (South Western Railway - about) 1746 Exeter St David's-to Axminster from the pre-covid timetable. I think the SWR then went empty to Salisbury.

It will be interesting what stock is used as Exeter depot uses 158s 166s and 150s to Barnstaple and there might be 165s as well after May.

Both the SWR 'locals' returned to Exeter - one in service, the other as ECS (Empty Coaching Stock).

The Turbos have not be gauge checked between Exmouth Junction and Axminster and, as far as I am aware, there are currently no plans to use them on the Axminsters.

Not quite, the second short working, the 17:46 from Exeter to Axminster used to terminate Axminster then run ECS to Salisbury via Castle Cary and Westbury as a route refresh turn for Salisbury drivers

This was opened Christmas 2017!
3  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: 1527 Exeter St D to Barnstaple on: December 30, 2013, 17:50:45
Hmmm bit of Daily Mail type reporting there, the 153 for the 08:23 Paignton can't be used for the simple reason that it can't be uncoupled at Exd due to the platform being occupied by PGN-EXM as well, it would mean effectively that 3 trains would be in the platform. As for the 07:00 from BNP (Barnstaple) having 60 standing, I've never seen anything like that many standing on that service in all the many times I've worked that service, usually around 15-20 standing after Crediton but that's it, the 15:27 is a problem simply because it usually chucks out a single 143 unit, it is though a pair of 153's whenever there is a spare available and quite often is the case, when it is formed of 2 153's there is ample seating on any normal day.
4  Journey by Journey / Shorter journeys in Devon / Re: Avocet Line - Exeter to Exmouth - incidents and events; services, stock and related improvements on: April 28, 2013, 21:35:02
all 3 car 150's would sort the problems.
5  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Gates won't accept tickets on: April 19, 2013, 20:35:18
If the barrier staff said that it had been too near to your phone then it must have shown an 09 code (unreadable) which means either a faulty avantix or a magnet has been near the ticket.
6  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Ticket checks at Taunton on: February 26, 2013, 18:32:59
Nor when the 07.30 from London Paddington arrives and there are two minutes to catch the bus to Bishops Lydeard for the West Somerset Railway in order to avoid a 30 minute wait and probably missing the train to Minehead to boot.
Not a booked connection then  Tongue Wink

Not sure where Melksham fits into this one but my point still stands, there are situations where it exists and should be protected for the reasons I posted.
8  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Rail tickets should be valid on buses ... on: February 21, 2013, 12:08:01
Some of you lot could find a problem for every solution, here we have a common sense approach to getting passengers to where they need to get to during disruption but that part has completely passed you by!
9  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: BBC News: Apology after man told to pay for London train trip twice on: February 21, 2013, 11:52:15
I agree with Trowres.  I bow to the encyclopaedic knowledge of colleagues on these matters, but could not the ORR» (Office of Rail and Road formerly Office of Rail Regulation - about) be given powers (or exercise them if they already have them) to ensure that advance fares are offered equitably over all Os and Ds so that the ludicrous situations earlier described do not arise?

Either that or FGW (First Great Western) start behaving like someone in business (in fairness the PR (Public Relations) man did his best) and less like the commercial wing of the Bob Crow Foundation for Keeping Po-Faced Britain Alive and Well.  It is not the staff's fault; they simply have to do their best with what they are given as instructions.

After that last comment, I think I'll put on 6 stones in weight and become a right-wing radio jock. Aha!

The fact that a ticket from A to C can be cheaper than from B to C isn't actually that stupid, I will give Cornwall as an example, now there are certain AP fares from Cornwall that are cheaper than Plymouth for the simple reason that Cornwall have less choice of services and therefore less potential flexibility for people to book on quieter trains, it is fairer on those people living in more rural parts, the danger of making a one size fits all type rule is that those people will suffer, at the end of the day they wont all of a sudden reduce the Plymouth fares. If you buy a ticket from Exeter to London thats exactly what you have bought, a ticket to travel from Exeter to London, not Taunton to London, not Bristol to London.

Only skimmed through this thread but find myslef in the rather unusual position of being on the side of Bignoesmac  Wink , FGW (First Great Western) staff, via the weekly retail circular, were given STRICT instructions to enforce this rule and now are backpedaling in the form of Mr Panes to make a local councillor happy. The staff are happy to enforce the rule or are happy to let people travel against this rule they just do what they are told to do! And i really dont know where the ^144.00 new ticket came from, a little mouse told me that he bought a Super Off-Peak Single which was nearer ^44.00, maybe a 1 was put in front for the extra bull sh1t factor.
11  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Ticket checks at Taunton on: February 16, 2013, 19:34:57
There will be a help point fitted to the "Minehead bus" gateline so that it can be remotely operated by the staff at the main gateline.
12  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: The Golden Hind on a Friday evening.... on: February 16, 2013, 19:32:52

For the sake of fairness, it should be warnings all round the first time, but then repeat the exercise a week later and start issuing excess fares to Taunton or writing out MG11 (Form to take a statement for use in court) forms, as appropriate.

What would you report them for if MGing them though? I suppose technically byelaw 18 (2) failing to show a valid ticket but no Magistrate would go with it.
13  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Why is a penalty threat printed onto my totally legitimate ticket? on: November 25, 2012, 01:39:05
OMG (Oh My doG ) how to make a mountain out of a mole hill! The truth is nobody reads the PF (Penalty Fare) warnings anyway judging by the amount of people who I PF saing "We always buy a ticket on the train", so why should those people who cant be arsed to get to the station in time to buy a ticket, who have a "the rules dont apply to me" attitude be treated the same as the people who DO get there in time, DO have the foresight to buy a season ticket? Thankfully most of the decent passengers I see often comment on how lovely it is to see RPI (Revenue Protection Inspector (or Retail Price Index, depending on the context))'s Penalty Faring the chancers who always seem to be late, always seem to sit right at the opposite end to the guard and 9 times out of 10 seem to get a free ride.

15  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Commuting daily from Newton Abbot or Exeter to London on: November 12, 2012, 22:51:22
Commuting from Exeter on SWT (South West Trains) would be a nightmare, for a start there are no plug sockets which isn't much good if you want to work with a laptop and the journey time is 3 and a half hours at best, as for price well it is cheaper via Honiton but you get what you pay for! and if your coming back from pad on the 1803 or 1903 you can enjoy the Pullman restaurant!
