Track replacement work (mainly on the up line) in progress today at Newbury Racecourse and Newbury.

Took my first ride yesterday evening, Canary Wharf to Paddington, which took about 18 mins.

Quiet, smooth, fast, a bit of a non-event really - but I guess that's how it should be.

What came across also was the size of the stations, they are like enormous underground caverns.

Presumably Lelant Saltings won't need doing, or St Ives itself. That only lives Lelant and Carbis Bay (which are both shorter IIRC^▸ (if I recall/remember/read correctly))?

I remember that at some point in the 1990's, Carterton was voted (by Daily Mail readers) as "possibly the ugliest town in England". Other military towns I can think of would probably also be high up on the list.

I've been on 5 cruises with P&O (the last 2 years ago) and long before Covid was even a thought, hand-sanitising was strictly enforced on entering the dining rooms and widely used when entering the food servery areas in the buffets.

Cleanliness on board always seemed pretty good to me and I never experienced any onboard food-poisoning outbreaks or anything else.

As usual, it seems to me that you look for the negative in order to support your belligerent views, rather than the reality, which is that the issues you describe (including a cruise ship encountering a storm) are fairly rare.

My experience of the latter is that it's sometimes a lot rougher outside than the ship will make you feel it is.

Saw them from Porthminster Beach in St Ives - fab 

St Ives itself was fairly quiet (although not dead by any stretch) during the G7. Saw the rail replacement buses on their route a number of times and they seemed fairly quiet also.

Came home yesterday, but on Tuesday St Ives was heaving, especially for a mid-week, term-time day.

Our honeymoon in 1995 was around the world in 3 weeks, via Bali, Queensland, New Zealand, Fiji and California. Longest stop anywhere was 6 days (Fiji).

Sounds a bit crazy thinking back to it now, but we were young and it was a great adventure.

About 48hrs (give or take) in the air - all in economy - and I remember the novelty that the last flight (LAX-LHR) was on a then brand-new Virgin 747-400 that had (very basic) seatback TV's!
