3076  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / Re: Derailed train at Penzance sidings - 26 June 2010 on: July 03, 2010, 12:46:04
Not much visible damage apart from a few dents and scratches here and there, suspect its more wheelset/bogie damage preventing movement by rail.

Power car loaded onto a lorry early hours of Friday morning for a breakfast time departure to Laira via the A30 to Exeter and the A38 back to Plymouth (30 mph 6 hrs)

Coaches departing after loading Friday morning.

is this because too big to go along the a38. Must be at least an extra 70 miles to go all way up to Exeter and back!

Thanks, willc.  The FGW (First Great Western) live updates indicates disruption in both directions, though?

08:58 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 11:29

This train has been cancelled. This is due to an earlier broken down train. Last Updated: 28/06/2010 07:05

I'd assume out of position trains that didn't make it up to great Malvern earlier on

3081  Journey by Journey / Plymouth and Cornwall / 150/153 combination noise on: June 25, 2010, 19:44:17
i have just been out of my house as i heard a very noisy train passing the viaduct at the end of my road, expecting to see some loco hauled combination it turned to be a 150/153 combined, the 150 was leading with the 153 at the back, are these normally very noisy workings or would you think it to of been a breakdown rescue? it passed over Angarrack Viaduct between Hayle and Gwinear road at 1930 approximate, i'd assume this to of been the 1916 penzance to plymouth service
3082  Journey by Journey / London to Reading / Re: Cable theft at Paddington causes severe disruption - 23 June 2010 on: June 23, 2010, 16:02:47

Service disruption between Paddington and Reading. Wednesday 23rd June at 15:55

Services between Paddington and Reading are severely disrupted due to signalling problems in the West Drayton area. Short notice cancellations, alterations and delays can be expected.

South West Trains, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry Trains, Virgin West Coast (Birmingham for Worcester) and London Underground are accepting First Great Western tickets on all reasonable routes.

Disruption is likely to  continue until at least 22:00.

Customers with non-essential plans are advised not to travel.

no good to you now but Newells travel agents in cornwall and Devon maybe further afield, are rail specialists, they have a dedicated telephone number for rail travel, and claim to be able to arrange travel across all of europe. they have an enquiry form here, and a telephone number  0800 008 7411 dedicated to train tickets

http://www.newellstravel.co.uk/book_rail.php

hope this will help you in the future or others as well

3090  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Northern don't want 142s back on: June 10, 2010, 17:26:35

Not really - firstly a trip from Paddington to Penzance will take very roughly 5 hours, as opposed to maybe 90 minutes Manchester to Blackpool. Secondly, those trains will travel over sections of track en route where the line speed is 125.

Use whatever perverse logic you like, but the 180s could be far better utilized by an intercity operator on an intercity service.

I was using the quicker CrossCountry time of approximately 240 minutes on the 180 miles between Bristol and Penzance.  This equates to a train running for 4 hours at an average speed of 45mph.  I haven't looked at the full timetable but  the 07:39 Penzance to Paddington service takes 4 hours 20 to reach Bristol so is has an avergage speed of just above 40mph on that section

you seem to of forgotten that the train stops at numerous stations for how ever long,  your quoted averages are based on journey times, not moving times, if you work out minus the stops then the speed is significantly faster, a slower train would take even longer as takes lnger to get between stations!
