31  All across the Great Western territory / Fare's Fair / Re: Who should get discounts? on: April 03, 2024, 10:53:25
Here's a simple fare chart from Poland - it would appear that fares are mileage based.

Mind - it is slightly more complex; I am on a pedelino at the moment and have had to pay a supplement.

Are you sure that's not the age of passengers on the left?

Cancellations to services between London Paddington and Reading

Due to a safety inspection of the track between London Paddington and Acton Main Line some lines are blocked. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Train services between London Paddington and Reading may be cancelled or delayed.

One of the four lines between London Paddington and Reading has been closed until it can be inspected by Network Rail. Until this is done fewer trains can run through the area, however, most of our long-distance services will still run, but may be delayed by congestion in the area. Our local stopping services that run between Didcot Parkway and London Paddington will terminate at Reading and the London Paddington to Didcot Parkway stopping services will start at Reading.

given that only 2% of trips in the UK (United Kingdom) are made by rail (compared to almost 60% by road) it simply isn't high enough on the agenda or influential enough to move the needle either way.

...

Out of interest, where do these figures come from? What is a 'trip'? Does 'by road' include trips made by bus, bicycle or walking?

From the Government. See Figure 4 specifically.

Delays to services between Newbury and Reading

Due to a fault with the signalling system between Newbury and Reading trains have to run at reduced speed.
Train services running to and from these stations may be delayed by up to 10 minutes. Disruption is expected until 18:30 01/04.

An long opinion piece from Lucy Mangan in i-News starts

Quote
I have made several train journeys in the past few weeks. So has my husband. So have many friends of mine. All to different places, on different networks, on different days, at different times and of different lengths, from the ordinary commute to intercity extravaganzas. Not one has completed their journey without some sort of problem. There have been breakdowns (of entire trains or important bits of them, like doors), signal failures, unspecified emergencies, a shortage of drivers, unexplained delays, damaged rails, closed platforms, “incidents”, electrical interruptions and assorted other miseries.

Lucy argues that everyone with the possible exception of her uncle is travelling for a purpose and the cost of the disruption on people's lives is phenomenal.  Will this be an election issue that will lead to or help the downfall of the government?

Behind a paywall so couldn't read it properly.

We're on the eighth consecutive day of relative operational chaos across various parts of the GWR (Great Western Railway) network with a week of disruption thanks to the latest round of ASLEF» (Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers and Firemen - about) strikes and overtime bans to come, you might think that it would have become a political issue by now but given that only 2% of trips in the UK (United Kingdom) are made by rail (compared to almost 60% by road) it simply isn't high enough on the agenda or influential enough to move the needle either way.

I suspect if you asked most people for the 5 issues that would influence their vote whenever Rishi decides to press go, rail travel would feature in vanishingly few...................but potholes on the other hand!.........  Wink

People are largely mitigating/avoiding the disruption by adapting their plans/behaviour.

Obviously higher up the ratings in a niche group such as this Forum.

Sadly not an April Fool joke.

Cancellations to services between Swansea and Cardiff Central
Due to failure of the electricity supply between Swansea and Cardiff Central all lines are closed.
Train services running to and from these stations will be cancelled. Disruption is expected until 13:00 01/04.

Customer Advice
Due to a power failure at Bridgend, no trains services are running between Swansea and Cardiff Central. The power failure is expected until mid-day. This also affects Transport for Wales trains so currently there are no options for travel between Cardiff Central and Swansea. Road transport has been requested, but so far is very limited; therefore customers are advised to delay their travel plans in South Wales until this afrernoon if possible. Tickets will be valid all day, and also tomorrow if customers choose to delay their journey. Refunds will also be given if customers choose not to travel, or do so by another means. Our London Paddington to Swansea trains will only run as far as Cardiff Central (operating an hourly service), with little option for onward travel.

GWR (Great Western Railway) apologises for an delay to your journey that this may cause you.

An electric rickshaw has been totally destroyed by fire, outside Buckingham Palace. Probably a lithium battery that was "over cooked" though even the much safer lead acid batteries can produce enough current to ignite defective wiring.

Wouldn't happen on a safe, comfortable, reliable 9 or 10 carriage IET (Intercity Express Train).

Excellent idea.

A pushbike is currently much more likely to get you to your destination than GWR (Great Western Railway).

And now this........any idea what's happened? (GWR (Great Western Railway) Twitter not working again due to "staff sickness" for the second time this weekend so no help from that direction)

Alterations to services at London Paddington

Due to urgent repairs to the railway at London Paddington fewer trains are able to run.
Train services running to and from this station have been revised. Disruption is expected until 12:00 31/03.

Customer Advice
We have been advised at short notice that Network Rail need to take possession of the railway in the London Paddington area from Saturday night until midday on Easter Sunday, 31st March 2024, in order to undertake crucial maintenance work to the track. As a result, most of the lines into and out of London Paddington will be closed, meaning significantly fewer trains will be able to run. To accomodate this work, a revised, emergency timetable is in operation.

***
Online journey planners have been updated to reflect the services that we are able to operate, but it is possible that there may be short notice changes and cancellations to the services that we are able to run on the day. Please check your journey before travelling.
***
With significantly fewer trains running, services are extremely busy. Passengers are strongly advised to avoid attempting to travel to/from London Paddington until after midday. Ticketing restrictions that would normally apply to advanced ticket holders have been lifted to allow you to travel later in the day.

All now re-instated.   Staff have been to site between Melksham and Bradford Junction and carried out repairs.   There were initially delays in finding staff, such have been the demands on permanent way staff over the last few days.

Looks like most (if not all) have been cancelled again, according to Journeycheck & National Rail.

Don't post here very often but a staff member has just told me that the branch is re-suspended UFN(resolve) after dislodged ballast was found by the checking train.

I spoke too soon!
