Was chatting to someone this evening who had been very impressed with the 2 + 4 HST▸ , and was more so impressed when he learnt that there were more of them in the pipeline.
Once I had highlighted their primary role, this chap said that GWR▸ had missed a trick by not using some of the space for a micro buffet for the commuters of Devon and Cornwall.
He has a point, could become quite sociable for regular communters.....
It would also have been nice to add a composite coach K to add first class for commuters traveling on a connected service.
I have the perfect solution..................... why not create an 8-coach train, complete with buffet, 1st Class and Standard Class, and put a diesel with a single cab at each end to save having to run around the train. I'm struggling for a name for it though.............. Ah, I have it...... "The InterCity High Speed Train" .......and use it to pootle between Plymouth & Penzance, at a "High Speed" of 40 mph stopping every 10 minutes?

I'm heading west tomorrow lunchtime and back on Sunday night. I'll be on the last service up so should run or an alternative be offered. The alternative would be to come back Monday along with all the surfers.
On balance I think Sunday is the better option!
Good luck with that. Your nightmare scenario of course is the (now) usual collapse of the service on Sunday & GWR▸ encouraging everyone to travel on Monday instead.....with all the surfers too that would be cosy!

Just goes to show they can do it when they want to.....perhaps similar on next Maundy Thursday.....I'm on the Royal Duchy heading for Plymouth, busy but not overly so....some poor chap got taken off by paramedics at Reading, didn't look too good.......lots of people moaning as there's no Pullman on this service today.
I take it you decided to go by train and risk it because its a weekday and not a weekend? Indeed. Coming back by road on Sunday though, I'm afraid I don't trust GWR▸ at the weekends. TM‡ has just announced that service is full and standing throughout 2nd class so my earlier comment about it being not overly crowded was overly optimistic!

To be clear - there are boarding controls at Paddington/Reading and all tickets are being checked?
And at Exeter, Plymouth and Par.

Why change? What is wrong with the air of mystery and the fact that those of us "in the know" can play the system to our advantage? Almost the only fun in my monthly trips to Blackpool to visit my late mother in the nursing home was in seeing how cheaply I could manage the trip - usually under £25 each way. My cousin recently sent her 17-year-old son to stay with his uncle in the north of Scotland, buying a Cross Country ticket from Bicester the night before and wondering a) why it cost so much and b) why she couldn't reserve a seat for him. It wasn't a trip planned at the last minute, just badly planned in terms of transport. People like her effectively subsidise those of us who know the value of booking at least a few days in advance.
Can't agree with that, seems a bit "I'm all right Jack" - the railways are massively subsidised by the taxpayer and as we all (mostly) pay tax, it should be a level playing field, it shouldn't favour those "in the know", fares should be transparent and easy for all to understand, be they enthusiasts or occasional travellers.

Getting back to talking about traincrews again, discussion seems to concentrate on drivers and guards but, according to peope's Tweets to GWR▸ , it seems that there are many instances of catering crew not available even on a journey from Penzance to London on a Sunday. GWR Journey Check tends not to show them even as there is a box for the info to be posted.
Makes sense. If the catering staff are working, there's no one to do the BBQ for the drivers that aren't. The Union is very strict about this sort of thing......one driver flips a burger and we'd be looking at months of strikes! ☺
