All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: A storm in a coffee cup?

This is rather a well timed post. See bbc1 now (9pm) Hugh fearnly whatever is doing a episode about waste with a big feature on coffee cups!
The HF-W programme was eye-opening. I (like virtually everyone else, apparently) believed that dropping my Starbucks/Costa/Caffe Nero/ GWR▸ cup into a recycling bin meant it had a high chance of being recycled. Not so: the plastic lining (to make the cup waterproof) renders the cardboard cup non-recyclable. Also, hygiene regs mean the cup can't be made from recycled material in the first place so all of the millions of coffee cups used daily come from new material. Yet, mysteriously, the companies' own websites seem to painting a very positive green picture. Worth watching on iPlayer if you didn't see it. If anyone can move the needle it's Hugh in his geeky glasses! My favourite bit was that Amazon flew their Head of Sustainability over from California to be interviewed. If you look up 'oxymoron' in the dictionary, does it say 'see that'?

Journey by Journey / Swindon to Gloucester / Cheltenham / Freight train "shot at" in Cheltenham - 25 Jul 16
|
on: July 25, 2016, 21:19:52
|
From BBC» News - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-36887709Armed police rushed to a level crossing amid reports a train driver had been shot at.
The freight train was travelling through Swindon Village in Cheltenham when the window of the cab shattered. There are no reports of injuries.
British Transport Police investigated whether the damage could have been caused by a pellet or slingshot.
But the BBC understands this was not the case, and police are trying to find out if a rock was hurled at the train.
Armed police have been stood down and the freight train has been moved off the section of track.
A BTP▸ spokesman said: "Officers are investigating and deploying resources to the scene along with their colleagues at Gloucestershire Police. They are trying to establish what happened."
All trains are running as normal after earlier delays.

It certainly is charmingly amateurish. I think some of the sound recordists might be doing their first real-life OBs too... The tweets are annoyingly banal though: "I've seen two 125s side-by-side at Paddington". I think I'll spend the next journey or two trying not to see two 125s side-by-side at Paddington.
For some reason it was quite amusing to see 43002 sitting at Swindon P3 with SW1205 showing a K route indicator and then watching it go by in the distance a few minutes later. I think it might be the first time 43002 has ventured Kemble-wards in its new colours (although I'm sure someone will prove me wrong!)

Thanks for amending the link Graham - it is an interesting read. An 'Orwellian system...' Excellent! And did we detect a little flirting from Ms. Perry? I thank the right hon. Member for Exeter (Mr Bradshaw) for his long-term commitment to using the railwaysâ€â€like me, he is an assiduous user of Great Western Railwayâ€â€and to cycling. There is a reason why the right hon. Gentleman looks as good as he does; I imagine that a lot of it is down to him cycling around the Exeter hills and dales.

Or the Flanders and Swann account in Built Up Area:
"I don't know where you get that stone from anyway - that's not local stone; I can tell. You get it from where? The Preseli Mountains? In Wales? I know it's in Wales - I've been abroad. Why d'yer want to bring it all that way... You're bringing it the wrong way anyway: you want to bring it round the Chanctonbury Ring road, avoiding the earthworks at Avebury."

OK, I'll take the rap for the generalisation; but it was meant to be slightly tongue-in-cheek. However, in my opinion, there's still way too much sloppy journalism around and too much relienace on social media feeds and the dreaded Wikipedia rather than taking time for serious research which was, I think, the nub of Tim's point. Anyway, wasn't the original news story from the Beeb, rather than a local newspaper? That's even more worrying!
