286  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Integrated travel - should be a routine alternative at times of disruption? on: July 02, 2023, 07:47:33
Ideally fully integrated travel (as in Switzerland? - or it used to be.  Not been there for many a year).
There again, are all those links fully subsidised, or run by private and separate operators.
287  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: July 01, 2023, 12:33:18
The failed Looe unit was repaired and normal services resumed.
Unfortunately, staff shortages are curtailing some evening runs.
Also shortages on the Newquay and Falmouth branches now appearing.
288  All across the Great Western territory / Buses and other ways to travel / Re: Integrated travel - should be a routine alternative at times of disruption? on: July 01, 2023, 12:28:32
Yes, £2 flat fare and concession passes (except Park for Truro plus a few other college & university services) for all busses in Cornwall.
However, timings of runs, and turn around times for First have been screwed so tight, it is not possible to wait for anything delayed anywhere.
Kernow were struggling for staff as GoCornwall were paying more for drivers than First.
First suffered a few strikes and the pay was broadly in line with GoCornwall.
However, GoCornwall now have a further pay rise, so suspect more Kernow drivers will defect.

But hang on a moment - what if our public transport system was treated as a network?  What if buses and trains talked to each other?

"OOOze gonna pay for it?". Nobody. It's already paid for.  Both trains and buses are under the tight management regulation of the public sector, all the alternative services I have mentioned are running already, financed already, and with (I can be pretty sure) space available for Phil and his two fellow passengers.

In Cornwall, First Kernow are run as a commercial service - they run if profitable.
GoCornwall/Transport for Cornwall are run on a council subsidy, so tend to run in the early mornings/late evening/Sundays, etc.

There are reports that even bus services that are supposed to connect to each other don't.
Largely due to traffic, temporary road works, diversions, lack of staff, etc.
Almost impossible to run a connected service on time.

If a train is delayed - should the bus wait?  Delaying it even a few minutes will give it late running further down that schedule, possibly missing other connection slots.
No easy answer.
290  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Shortage of train crews on Great Western Railway since September 2017 - ongoing discussion on: July 01, 2023, 11:10:57
11:14 Newquay to London Paddington due 15:57
11:14 Newquay to London Paddington due 15:57 will be terminated at Plymouth.
It will no longer call at Newton Abbot, Exeter St Davids, Reading and London Paddington.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

This one seems to have become the 'Melksham' service to be curtailed, especially at weekends.
Latterly either curtailed completely or curtailed at Plymouth.

Weekends looking increasingly bleak for shortage of crew.
Interesting that this thread has been going since September 2017 and GWR (Great Western Railway) are still short (of staff AND trains)!
291  All across the Great Western territory / The Wider Picture in the United Kingdom / Re: WiFi on trains - vital to customers, or just a "nice to have"? on: June 28, 2023, 07:40:26
I like to have RTT» (Real Time Trains - website) and OpenTrainTimes running on two tabs.
Then glancing at the news, etc whilst travelling.
Always found the train WiFi too slow, but don't always get a good mobile signal either.
292  Journey by Journey / London to the West / Re: Half term Havoc ? on: June 27, 2023, 07:14:09
This forum title ought to renamed to something else now, as half term has long passed.
However, delays to crew, shortages of crews, line and equipment failure, concerts (sorry, festivals), shortages of trains all appear in other forum branches, so no one section totally applicable!
293  All across the Great Western territory / Across the West / Re: Problems with IET trains from April 2021 on: June 26, 2023, 03:48:23
Seems to be several short forms 5 (vice 9 or 10) already this morning.
294  All across the Great Western territory / Smoke and Mirrors / Re: Swindon -> Weymouth. Two views. on: June 25, 2023, 09:27:03
Could a HST (High Speed Train) be used, (despite being phased out); or a 5 car IET (Intercity Express Train)?
295  All across the Great Western territory / Introductions and chat / Re: Out and about, June, 2023 on: June 25, 2023, 08:52:50
I claim the wooden spoon.  I would have scored one - I'd have guessed Pompe[y], and I hadn't even noticed the Westbury sign.  Mind you, I have an excuse - I've never been to any of the stations, at least not the ones mentioned by PhilWakeley.
Lovely job Phil, well done.
I'm with PrestburyRoad, total 1.
I noticed a station sign but don't know how to enlarge pictures, so didn't.
I was going for Taunton somewhere as that's as famous as Melksham, but hadn't seen any 3rd rail placements there recently.
Portsmouth Harbour, Fareham were part of my pre-teen years as stayed with an Aunt and Uncle in Gosport.
Not been back train-wise since.

Mods - please move as required - not the correct post to put this but..

Cancellations to services between Plymouth and Penzance
Due to a points failure between Plymouth and Penzance the line towards Penzance is blocked.
Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 13:15 24/06.
And
Cancellations to services between Gunnislake and Bere Alston
Due to a points failure between Gunnislake and Bere Alston the line towards Gunnislake is blocked.
Train services running to and from these stations may be cancelled. Disruption is expected until 14:30 24/06.

Two excursions are Penzance bound today, having lost considerable time between Newton Abbot and Plymouth.
Also delays on service trains.
If the line is blocked between Plymouth and Penzance, why is delaying services from Newton?

Lived there for many years, met and married my Wife, also from Falmouth, in Falmouth!
Neither of us are Cornish, but Cornish by association and living in Cornwall for many many years (but that's a totally different topic).

Member broadgage will be shaking his head in sadness.
