From the Financial Times

Quote
National Express is in talks to buy smaller rival Stagecoach in a deal that would bring together two of the UK (United Kingdom)’s largest transport operators as the pandemic-ravaged industry emerges from the crisis.

Posting in the "Wider Picture" as Stagecoach no longer run the South Western franchise, and National Express no longer run the Wessex franchise!

Also on the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page)

Quote
National Express has confirmed it is in talks to buy rival transport firm Stagecoach.

Under the terms of the potential deal, National Express would own about 75% of the combined group and Stagecoach 25%.

National Express said it would be able to slash costs as a result of the merger, and expected the newly formed group to find savings of at least £35m.

It will be interesting to see what the MMC (Monopolies and mergers commission) has to say about this given their stance on the proposed purchase by Stagecoach of First bus interests in N Devon some years ago

Given that the MMC closed in 1999, I shouldn't expect they'll have much to say.

Bad news for areas served by both Megabus and National Express. With no competition coach fares will inevitably rise.

But the CMA (Competition and Markets Authority) might have something to say.
