Fair enough - but begs the new question "why is the gap no longer needed for access?". 

IIRC (if I recall/remember/read correctly) they've built a new access route that doesn't cross the railway.

Work on the line is due to formally finish on Tuesday.

Congratulations to them.   I suppose the Rueben to Llangollen section is too far gone to consider a relink to the national network?

The worst bit is in Llangollen itself just east of the Railway bridge.  Too far gone I think.

Yes, a fair bit of building on the line at both ends unfortunately. The stuff in Ruabon could be fixed by CPOing half a dozen houses and knocking them down, but as ellendune says, Llangollen is more difficult. The trackbed used to be wedged between the canal and the A539 on one side, and the River Dee on the other; it's now been comprehensively built over, and the limited space available means you'd have to knock everything down in order to reinstate the railway.

Unfortunately I think this is pretty much as far as the Llangollen Railway will ever go.

Further west, though, Bala-Trawsfynydd (with a diversion round the reservoir) would make a truly excellent cycle route...
