A delightfully twee and quaint British Transport Films short from 1959. Music's rather jolly as well:

Nice to see not all the lines travelled in this film are no longer. I went over one of those swing bridges in Norfolk just last year...

Oh, and not a hi-viz or other PPE in sight.

 Cheesy

EDIT: Oh, and doesn't 'Dad' sound like that other rail enthusiast, Michael Palin?  Grin

Thank you for that bignosemac Wink That was really a pleasure to watch.

Incidentally, through the recommended videos on that link, I found this one: (Network Rail - home page)=1&v=S5iKZf_rwgU" target="_blank">http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=endscreen&NR=1&v=S5iKZf_rwgU

Which shows how they did the Electrification from Liverpool Street to Southend Victoria Smiley

Although quite how a "Carol Vodermans Mini Skirt is too short" came up in the same recommended videos section is beyond me! Shocked Roll Eyes Cheesy

Hmm, that Carol Vorderman clip is well out of place. Didn't stop me watching it though.....  Grin Grin Grin

"All change here for electricity." Dun dun duuuhhh. The voice over and dramatic music gives the impression that the changes to the sparky stuff are a portend of doom...

Dad seems to know a lot about the railways ... perhaps he should also be the driver!

The BTF Film archive is a real treasure chest I've seen the diesel one and lots of others including some of the staff instructional ones when I was on BR (British Rail(ways)).

In fact most of the Big Four had film units bfore the war along with the GPO(resolve).

During the war they combined into the Ministry Of information and produced propaganda  films. After the war was most nationalised industries had film units.

We have a chap in club who is a cine buff who collects 16mm film on which most were produced. He has an aweful lot. They are real insights into life in the 30s to 60s.

One I remember was on  the lost art of single line working, showing the various ways of setting it up and the use of the different  forms. one of the crosovers was at Avril (April?) Hammer. All the passenger trains were hauled by Standards so could be a lot of places. Then they did a goods train, and a S&D (Somerset and Dorset Joint Railway) 7F comes in to view.

Of course no yellow jackets or hard hats.

Avril Hammer equals  Shepton Mallet on the S&D
