The University of Bristol has announced plans to establish the world’s first open access Quantum Technologies Innovation Centre, focusing on taking quantum research from the lab and into the commercial world and positioning the UK (United Kingdom) as a global leader in the field.

Experts predict that harnessing the quantum world - the behaviour of matter and energy on the atomic and subatomic level - will revolutionise technology by making it faster, smaller, more secure and, ultimately, more useful for a wide variety of applications.

... and, in English?  Roll Eyes

They're going to look at the little bits quite closely, and sell them for a lot of money until someone realises they've been had.

An article just published and given quite high prominence on the DevonLive website refers to South Western Railway's electric stock. So, whilst the stock photograph is relevant to the article, I don't actually think the article itself is relevant to the good folk of Devon unless the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) have decided to extend the third rail as far as Devon!

South Western Railway announces huge train improvement project
The work will see power points, real-time travel information and new seats, carpets and tables all introduced

South Western Railway train

South Western Railway has signed contracts worth £50m with Siemens to refurbish over 150 of its trains operating between Devon and London.
As part of £1.2bn investment plans, SWR» (South Western Railway - about)'s existing 172-strong Class 444 and Class 450 Desiro fleet of trains which currently operate across the SWR network are being upgraded.

Just another example of the low quality of local journalism.  In fact is there even any journalism, or does a computer trawl present it to some sort of online editor or may not even be in the area of circulation?

Slightly differently, but I remember when SWT (South West Trains) originally announced the new 707 inner suburban trains,  the same stories appeared in local newspapers and websites all over the SWT network area, despite the majority of places never seeing the "red trains" normally.

That'll be some clever new wireless (or possibly railless) power points, then?

Hah! They've updated the photo! (see http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=11558.msg224794#msg224794)

Someone was obviously stung by my acerbic observations about the Cattle Market Tavern.

It's still a diesel train though, by the looks of it... and will they ever move that stack of concrete trunking?

From Bude Today

Quote
A MEETING of Connect Bude, the action group whose aim is to reconnect Bude and Holsworthy to the national rail network via Okehampton, was held at the Falcon Hotel, Bude, on Tuesday evening, January 16, writes Christine Williams.

The chairman, Richard Wolfenden Brown, reported that there had been a lot of positive interest and support from the public for the project at a pop-up membership drive held in the Triangle the previous Saturday when eight new members and 12 new supporters signed up.
