This topic has been moved to Frequent Posters Club.

http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=11652.0

In order to reduce the number of sign-up requests that the administrators have to vet, we have introduced a system which helps to reduce sign-ups that we consider to be spammerous.

The discussion has been moved to "frequent posters'; if you feel that (as a guest / new user) you have been unjustly stopped, please send me an email. See more at http://www.wellho.net/mouth/3946_Moving-from-a-warning-system-to-a-control-system-PHP-forum-spammers.html - Graham

From my (spam) email this morning ...

Quote
We create a profile for you on thousands
of different forums, and add a link to your
website on each of the profile.

- Submission to thousands of forums
- Permanent One-way Links
- Ownership of all the accounts created
- Detailed Submission Report

We provide different packages at different prices.

For Full Details please read the attached .html file

... it's no wonder that we have to take some measures to avoid off-topic, profile-raising, advert-intending signups!

The major topic remains in "Frequent posters" ... I can confirm that signups are now at a more manageable level for the admins; mostly clear cases too in one direction or the other.  Very occasionally we get it wrong and end up having to apologise to a genuine person who's feathers are ruffled - sad that we have to be so careful.

Our system of identifying potential folks signing up for "off-topic, profile-raising, advert-intending" posting - and doing so across thousands of forums - has dramatically cut the amount of crap that the admins have had to go through for the past 2 years.

I always have / had a concern that we might also catch a few genuine requests, and the system that we're using (a learning system) has a very long memory. So I'm doing a bit of bookkeeping.  If you have found that you can't access the forum from certain places, please try again and you may find the problem is cured ... let me know either way (now works for me, still a problem) as I need everyone's help to know whether I've helped or hindered.

I can't imagine how anyone would have a problem cutting spam. How on earth would you manage with stewing steak?

Do you have something you would like to add to this thread, or would you like to raise a new question at the Coffee Shop? Please [register] (it is free) if you have not done so before, or login (at the top of this page) if you already have an account - we would love to read what you have to say!

You can find out more about how this forum works [here] - that will link you to a copy of the forum agreement that you can read before you join, and tell you very much more about how we operate. We are an independent forum, provided and run by customers of Great Western Railway, for customers of Great Western Railway and we welcome railway professionals as members too, in either a personal or official capacity. Views expressed in posts are not necessarily the views of the operators of the forum.

As well as posting messages onto existing threads, and starting new subjects, members can communicate with each other through personal messages if they wish. And once members have made a certain number of posts, they will automatically be admitted to the "frequent posters club", where subjects not-for-public-domain are discussed; anything from the occasional rant to meetups we may be having ...
