Attached is a pdf of the new timetable for the new services replacing the current X4 Bath-Salisbury service.

http://www.firstgroup.com/ukbus/southwest/bristol/service_changes/264-265-Jan08.pdf

Summary is that First are bringing back the old 264/265 services which will operate between Bath-Warminster which will connect with a new service 24 which will be operated by Wilts and Dorset between Warminster-Salisbury.

Sure its no longer a through service Bath-Salisbury but its still a reasonably good compromise service being offered with a change at Warminster with through tickets still available.

Seems near enough similar to what happened with the 375/6 (Bristol - Yeovil/Bridgwater)

Thanks for this, Timmer ... I've had a look at the timetable and can understand where they're coming from.    They talk about reliability issues with the long route and I hope that they don't simply break those 7 minute connections at Warminster.   (And wouldn't it have been sensible and well integrated to go the whole hog and terminated the buses at Warminster station / provide and show connections)

Melksham to Salisbury by bus - WAS 2 services with a change at Trowbridge or Devizes ... now only the "via Devizes" option is viable unless you want to have two changes on the way ...

Wilts and Dorset has lost the number 24 service to a rival bus and coach provider (link below.)
http://www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk/display.var.2243373.0.no_24_bus_changes_hands.php

The contract for the service, which replaced the X4 and X5 service, was won by Bodmans after a tender was put out two months ago.

Concerns that Bodmans' buses were too old fashioned have been put to rest after Bodmans assured new buses would be provided.

The contract is due to start from June 1 and will cover services between Salisbury and Warminster.

Full circle ... reverting to a through service from 28th July - here's Monday to Friday, Soutbound

And the prize for resurrecting the oldest topic goes to...only kidding  Grin

This is one of the more popular forthcoming Firstbus changes at my end, as people are definitely looking to stretch their FirstDay South West tickets on days out.

The prize, it would appear, is a quote from First Bus at last!  Grin

Quote from: First Bus
Extended 265 route creates direct link from Bath-Salisbury

From Sunday 28 July 2013 we are pleased to announce that Service 265 will be extended to Salisbury.

The new service will mean that passengers can travel directly Bath-Warminster-Salisbury without having to change buses, and through tickets will be available.

Full details of this and the other service changes happening in July will also be appearing on our website and in the press in the coming days.

As well as the extension to Salisbury, there is a significantly improved Sunday service (how often have we said that in the recent past?) with First adding in commercial journeys to the Wiltshire Council supported ones to make an hourly daytime frequency overall. There will also be a very early first arrival into Bath from Trowbridge at 0829 compared with the current 1031 first arrival. Also good to see the reinstatement of a later evening last bus from Bath to Trowbridge at 2135.

Yarnbrook in particular benefits from other improvements such as additional earlier morning and later evening services during the week.

There are some negatives, such as the absence of 265 journeys via Wylye, truncation and/or withdrawal of first and last Salisbury/Warminster journeys, a slightly earlier finish to the weekday evening service, plus the standardisation of the route through Winsley probably not being to everyones taste.

Overall though, it has to be a "Well Done First" on this particular one from me, and I can see why they have opened their service change publicity drive with it.

Official message from Wiltshire Council regarding the upcoming service changes:

Quote from: Wiltshire Council
We have been advised by the First bus company that starting on the 29 July, they will be introducing a new bus service between Warminster and Salisbury as a commercial venture, operating on a similar route and timetable to the existing bus service 24.

First will be providing their new service as an extension of their existing route 265 that currently runs from Bath to Warminster, re-instating the through service from Bath to Salisbury that was withdrawn a few years ago. We are sure that this will be welcomed by many bus users but it does mean that Wiltshire Council will no longer be able to continue funding the operation of service 24 and so that service will cease to operate from the same date.

We have been advised that the single and day return fares charged on service 265 will be similar to those currently charged on service 24, but as Wiltshire Council will have no involvement in the running of the new service, the arrangements for bus passes and multi-journey tickets will be different:

- 10-journey tickets will continue to be sold by the drivers on the buses but the prices are expected to be different from 29 July. However, if you have already purchased a 10-journey ticket on a service 24 bus you will not be able to use this after 27 July, so please ensure that you have used it up before then.

- If you purchase a day return ticket from Stapleford, Stoford or South Newton, on Wilts & Dorset bus service 2, you will be able to use it to return home on service 265 (and vice versa). However, other tickets issued by Wilts & Dorset (including Keycards and Explorers) will not be accepted for travel on service 265, so if you have one of these, please ensure that you have used this up before 27 July.

- Senior Citizens and passengers with disabilities who have been issued with a National Concessionary bus pass will still be able to travel free of charge, provided that their bus pass has not expired.

Whilst the new timetable will be similar to that provided by service 24, we realise that it may not be convenient for everybody. We would therefore be keen to hear from any regular users of service 24 who will no longer be able to make an essential journey as a result of this change, so that we can see if it is possible for us to provide a cost effective alternative. Please send this information to:

The Passenger Transport Unit, Wiltshire Council, County Hall, Trowbridge. BA14 8JN
or email it to buses@wiltshire.gov.uk

It has also been stressed to me by a well-placed source that all the commercial initiatives by First must be considered as one year experiments and could easily change or disappear if the economic situation changes.  It is very much a case of use it or lose it, as, although Wiltshire Council have had considerable discussions with First about the times that the services will run, it is unlikely that Wiltshire Council will be able to fund the same level of service if First Group decide that they are uneconomic.

What came first here - First deciding to run commercially or the 24 being withdrawn? I ind it somewhat unlikely that First would just casually jump in without there being at least a hint of the 24 being in danger.

I don't know if I agree with "one year", but an experiment this most definitely is. And it will be so far from a depot (or even an outstation) that any problems at the Salisbury end will be difficult to overcome without W&D's help.

Having sought an answer to this question from a source (my HP bottle will be running dry in a minute), I am told that Warminster-Salisbury is one of Wiltshire Council's best used contracted services so there is no way that they would have stopped funding it if First hadn't decided to run it commercially.

However, they would have had to retender it as the existing contract was due to expire anyway and so First apparently decided to time their decision to extend the 265 to Salisbury to coincide with this, having been talking about doing it for almost a year.

Personal view? - I think that if it had been a case of First "saving" the bus service between Warminster-Salisbury, then they would have worded their publicity about the new 265 extension accordingly, and as you will see from the news release quoted earlier in this topic, they didn't.

When this has been the case previously, such as with the Burnham and Minehead late evening services that they have been running commercially since local authority support was withdrawn (and are now about to withdraw themselves) they have made sure their publicity fully mentions and reflects this.

First's further take on the upcoming service 264/265 changes:

Quote from: First Bus
Bus users between Bath and Salisbury to make a connection

People wanting to travel between Bath and Salisbury will soon have a brand new direct bus, as one of First's existing services is being extended to link the two cities.

From 29 July Service 265, which currently connects Bath and Warminster, is being extended to provide services to and from the city of Salisbury. The section of the route that is being extended, from Warminster to Salisbury, will take less than one hour to travel and pass through Heytesbury, Codford St. Mary, Steeple Langford and South Newton.

This addition to the route of the Service 265 will mean that customers will be able to hop on board, buy just one ticket for the whole journey and travel between Bath and Salisbury directly without having to change buses. Monday to Saturday, Service 265 will run hourly for most of the day.

Residents of Winsley will be pleased to find that Service 264/265s route will be simplified with the introduction of a single route through the village. From 28 July buses will operate by Limpley Stoke Road, Bradford Road and Tyning Road in both directions. This will mean one stop on Bradford Road (close to Ashley Lane) and one stop on the B3108 (close to Dane Rise) will no longer be served. Overall this alteration will mean that people living in Winsley will benefit from one route operating every half an hour rather than two, slightly different routes, each operating once an hour.

In addition to these changes the Service 264/265s timetable is being altered slightly. Most notably, the first journey from Bath, Monday to Friday, will leave 25 minutes later at 0700 rather than 0635 hours. Customers will however have a greater choice of journey times as extra morning and evening journeys are being added to the timetable.

Changes to the Service 264's timetable will mean that the last journey from Bath to Warminster in the evening, Monday to Saturday, will leave 10 minutes earlier at 2320 hours. The last three journeys in either direction will continue to be funded by Wiltshire Council, however all the others will be provided commercially by First.

Finally, on Sundays and Public Holidays a number of positive changes are being made to the timetable of the Service 265. The frequency of buses between Bath and Trowbridge is going to be increased from two-hourly to hourly for much of the day and there will be some earlier first and later last journeys. Changes to the funding arrangements mean that First will operate the vast majority of these journeys on a commercial basis, with Wiltshire Council funding just a handful of the early morning and late evening ones.

Jonathan Barnard, First's General Manager for Bath, Bristol and Wells, says, "We are delighted to be introducing a new direct link between these two great cities, Bath and Salisbury. The extension of Service 265s route will allow our customers to travel simply and easily by just hopping on board, paying for a single ticket and enjoying the ride. The route covers over 40 miles and goes through two counties, but will cost just ^7 with a FirstDay South West ticket, which allows unlimited travel on all of our buses in the South West of England for a whole day.

"Customers should be aware that there have been a number of changes and improvements to both the Service 264 and 265 so we strongly advise them to check the new timetable carefully before making any future travel arrangements."
