From the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page):

Bala Lake Railway bid to extend line to town

The last train left Bala town in 1965 although part of the line reopened alongside Llyn Tegid (Bala lake)

Passenger trains could return to a Gwynedd town almost 50 years after the last departed.

Bala Lake Railway volunteers want to extend it the town itself as it currently stops half a mile short.

The heritage railway was set up in 1972 after the line shut seven years earlier. An attempt to reconnect with Bala in the 1980s was unsuccessful.

Now, rail enthusiasts are hoping to win support for their ^2m plans.

Manager Roger Hine said the group wanted to seek the views of local people as they start to take their plans forward, but he said it could take years before they came to fruition.

The narrow gauge line runs steam trains and passengers on a nine-mile (14km) return route towards Bala from Llanuwchllyn.

It travels along the former standard gauge route which ran between Ruabon in Wrexham and Barmouth on the north Wales coast.

The section was reopened as a narrow gauge line to utilise smaller steam engines which became available from slate quarries in north Wales as the industry changed.

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

T'will be interesting to see their proposal. There look to be three river crossings, an access road on the formation and a town industrial estate on the station site, all to overcome.

What a pity the planners won't protect transport corridors, especially when there's so much farmland around, often in set-aside.

Good luck to them and may they allow for mixed gauge access to Bala Town to tempt the Corwen extension further West.

Set-aside was abolished in 2008

Can't find a clear statement of their plans, but I gather they've been talking about this for years. Anyone know if they plan to build a new chord, or are they planning to reverse at Bala Jct?

With 2' gauge a new chrod at Bala Jn wouldn't take much land as the lines used to diverge quite sharply.

Bala was an interesting station as it was in a time warp where you departed  before you arrived. If you were travelling from Barmouth to Ruabon.
