102-year-old Cardiff railway bridge to be replaced

Network Rail Wales says the bridge must be replaced with a larger and stronger crossing

A busy 102-year-old railway bridge in Cardiff will be shut for more than a year so it can be rebuilt.

Windsor Road bridge, which connects Adamsdown with Splott and is on the south Wales main line, will be closed from January 2015 to spring 2016.

Network Rail Wales said the bridge must be replaced with a larger, stronger crossing.

It will be gradually demolished and Cardiff council will set up a diversion.

One trusts that the diversion will be set up before the bridge is gradually demolished ...  Grin

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

And isn't 'Splott' a wonderfully strange name for a suburb!  Grin

Splott is one of the most deprived areas in Wales.*  This is not going to help in the immediate future, but must be good for the long term.

As someone who grew up a stone's throw from Splott, it never occurred to me that it might be regarded as a curious name. Although as our house was within the catchment area of the local comprehensive school for Spoltt, it certainly occurred to the family to apply for a different school given the socio-economic demographic of its intake.
