Opportunism ... we keep our eyes open for a historic building to transplant to Melksham ... (and the station isn't the only possible sight)

CAMPAIGNERS are calling for Network Rail to sell a derelict building at a rural train station in Caithness or demolish it on health and safety grounds.

Friends of the Far North Line (FoFNL) said the building, which is on the platform at Georgemas Junction, has been empty for over two decades and it is now time to find it a new use or tear it down.

The view follows FoFNL^s 2015 station survey during which investigations were undertaken at each of the stations on the route to identify suggestions for improvements to be carried out by Network Rail and Abellio ScotRail.

The state of the building at Georgemas came under heavy criticism from FoFNL which said action needed to be taken for rail users^ safety.

Perhaps a bit too far north ...

If the footbridge at Taplow isn't reinstated, you could have that I reckon? It's of Victorian vintage..........stood the test of time until some clown in a crane clobbered it!  Smiley

I was going to say Boncath station is currently for sale, but then I checked and I see it is now under offer. Would be better if it could be saved in-place, but failing that I'd rather see it go to a good home than fall down / get demolished. Shame you weren't in the market six years ago, you could have saved Fishguard & Goodwick's station building, which was one of my favoriate buildings (although it would almost certainly have needed three new walls and a roof).

Don't DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)) it, keep the guard (but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea if the driver unlocked the doors on arrival at calling points).

This is probably one of those things that might - just - happen at some point in the future when availability and projects align - so please keep posting here of buildings in danger but they're almost always going to be wistful thinning long shots.  We did take a look at the Salveson Caboose idea, but let that pass as it would have been likley to have become a feature looking for a benefit at Melksham, and had we got it and found it underutilised it would have remained as a constant reminder ... better for shorter term to be looking at platform extension and additional access (to the residential areas / shops / restaurants / buses of the local centre) rather than a non-historic building.   With a historic building, the balance could - just could - be tipped the opposite way to it was with the caboose idea.
