19:30 on 18th February at Melksham Assembly Hall - Slide show by Mike Stone. ^3 guests

There's a bus back to Bath after the show (around 10:30 / route 271) - but (sorry) Well House Manor is fully booked that night

Gosh, that threw me for a moment. Could have been fascinating hearing about the problems faced with the contraction of railways, but the actual topic concerns their construction..!

I was puzzling over that too - but thinking maybe it was about contracting, which I'm sure is what Brunel did with most of the building work. But the same double-take happens when you consider the role of tenders (if not tendering) in the operation of railways, ancient and modern. Mysterious stuff, vocabulary.

Yeah ... I was posting late in the day there. 

The contraction from 7'1" to 4'9" happened a few years laterer.

If I may just pick you up on a minor typo there, grahame, it was actually a 'contraction' from 7' 1/4" to 4' 81/2".  Wink Cheesy Grin
