My automated phone alerts inform me that this train today will have 2, not 8 coaches.
That could be a cozy ride if that is the case.

You'd have thought a 3-car could have been found, though that would of course have meant something else running short.  Was known about at around midday so plenty of notice.

Isn't Shipton a 2car platform, or SDO (Selective Door Opening) needed?

Thats one of the reasons why the halts trains are exactly that

Three cars in that direction, so it would have been ok, though it is two cars coming the other way.

Yep. Also possible to operate with a 3-car and send passengers for the shorter platforms by taxi from Oxford - I've seen that done a couple of times.
