I always remember in Germany the PostBus. Large single deckers painted yellow. Now long gone. Like all public transport, sacrificed to the motor car, will climate change eventually cause the idea to return?
One way of interpreting some recent policy announcements is that the government is still trying to sacrifice public transport to the motor car and are now trying to use the threat of climate breakdown against public transport (by legislating that new motor cars must be electric from 2040, but leaving buses and Midland Main Line trains diesel-powered).

Don't DOO (Driver-Only Operation (that is, trains which operate without carrying a guard)) it, keep the guard (but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea if the driver unlocked the doors on arrival at calling points).

I think you will find that the Government pronouncement on future vehicles leaves a lot of wriggle room. It only stated that 'conventional' petrol and diesel powered vehicles would be banned - which permits the use of hybrids which have petrol or diesel engines. By the 2040s I suspect most vehicles will have some form of hybrid drive anyway - so I don't think Gove's statement will make any practical difference to developments.
