Because the ticket from Reading to Andover (any time return) only cost £16.10 I probably won't try and claim a refund but did wonder where I would start?

One day this week my journeys suffered the following delays (I think these happened on the same day but it's the principle that I am asking about)

Morning
From Reading to Basingsoke (cows on line) delayed over 30 minutes
From Basingstoke to Andover - delays of over 30 minutes due to signalling problems

Afternoon
From Andoover back to Basingsoke - routed back via Salisbury and Southampton meaning a journey should have taken 16 minutes took nearly an hour

So who would apply to for compensation? the morning leg had delays with two different TOCs (Train Operating Company) so what would happen there?

Cows on the Line are outside of railway control & thus don't count for compensation.
(although I have argued unsuccessfully in the past that NR» (Network Rail - home page) are responsible for all line-side fencing and thus could be within railway control - their argument is that a farmer could leave a gate open, so is considered outside their control)

So a claim to whoever ran SWT (South West Trains)/SWR» (South Western Railway - about) at the time of the signalling problems should get your outward claim.

You need to ascertain why you were re-routed in order to provide further info.

Thanks Chris. The rerouting was due to a broken down freight train which we literally went over on the way back from Southampton to Basingstoke. I guess there aren't too many places on that route where there are tracks that pass over each other - but I stand to be corrected!
