...by speaking in school assemblies. I remember my son telling me about a talk they'd had on the subject of travelling to school by train and generally rail travel and safety but didn't realize at the time it was, in effect, an individual effort.

Ticket inspector on Bristol commuter line sorts out unruly teens by turning up at their school assembly
He offered cheaper tickets if they behaved and took CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) to their teachers - and it worked

A train ticket inspector faced with the daily nightmare of unruly teenagers on his line got them to behave – by turning up at their school assembly.

Dwain White even took CCTV from the train carriages to show teachers, and offered the youngsters cheaper tickets if they stopped being so troublesome.

Now the GWR (Great Western Railway) man has won a prestigious national award for his work to single-handedly change the behaviour of an entire train full of kids.

The youngsters took the train on the Severn Beach line every afternoon, and some of the behaviour was causing a big problem for other children and all the other passengers on the line in Bristol.

The line, which serves stations in inner city Bristol including Lawrence Hill, Stapleton Road, Montpelier, Redland and Clifton Down, is a popular one for school children.

Dealing with anti-social behaviour by school kids isn’t part of his role as a ‘revenue protection inspector’, but Mr White won the award for ‘Outstanding Personal Contribution’ at the National Rail Awards, for making it his mission to sort out.

“He worked single-handedly to change the behaviour of school children on the Severn Beach Line and make it a more pleasant railway for both passengers and staff,” said a spokesman for GWR.

“He worked with local schools, including showing staff the extent of the problem, speaking at assemblies, and setting up a committee of pupils – Rail Ambassadors – and introducing a subsidized season ticket scheme for those that adhered to a Pupil Code of Conduct,” he added.

With the schools fully aware of the behaviour of their pupils, and financial incentives to behave, gradually things got better on the trains.

The judges at the National Rail Awards were impressed. “Dwain was not employed to sort this problem out so he could have just let the status quo be,” one said.

“But there was no way he was going to sit back and not at least try and do something to change the situation. He went the extra mile because he believed this was the right thing to do,” he added.

Very commendable. Though I wonder how long before the subject of using CCTV (Closed Circuit Tele Vision) for such purposes is raised (as it was in the notorious Corbyn case).

Excellent work from that member of staff, and a thoroughly deserved award.  Just shows these "backslapping" industry awards aren't all bad.

Very different. As far as I'm aware the CCTV in this case hasn't been released to the media.

Also, Jeremy Corbyn was neither being anti-social or fare dodging.

CCTV being used exactly as it should be. Identifying troublemakers and letting would-be troublemakers know they are being watched and there will be consequences if there is anti-social behaviour. Disseminating the CCTV with those who can identify troublemakers (teachers) is actually far more preferable for all concerned than GWR (Great Western Railway)/BTP (British Transport Police) publishing it.

At Great Western Railway's Community Partnership event in Barnstaple earlier this year, the seating plan for the formal dinner happened to place me next to Dwain White at a table - I'd not met him before.

In our conversation over dinner, Dwain's enthusiasm and commitment to making things work / better was incredible.  His anecdotes about things he had seen and done, particularly 'over and above' his role as a revenue protection inspector on the Severn Beach Line, really impressed me.  His energy and commitment to 'getting things done' was frankly inspirational.

Congratulations on your well-deserved award, Dwain.  Cheesy
