Christmas rail delays: Work to shut lines across UK (United Kingdom)

Rail passengers are being advised to travel earlier to avoid disruption over the Christmas period, with more than 200 sets of engineering works planned.

Routes across London, Kent, East Sussex, Lancashire, Essex and Glasgow are among the lines to be shut.

Network Rail, which controls the UK's railways, says 95% of the network will be unaffected and it is the least disruptive time to do this work.

Bus replacements are planned but journey times are likely to increase.

London Paddington will be closed for four days between Christmas Eve and 27 December with Great Western Railway advising passengers to travel by 23 December "at the latest".

Between 23 December and 1 January, there will be no Greater Anglia trains between London Liverpool Street and Ingatestone or Billericay.

Elsewhere, buses will replace trains between Preston and Lancaster from Christmas Eve until 27 December.

Over this three-day period, those travelling between London and Glasgow will also face longer journey times as passengers are advised to go via Edinburgh.

Southeastern trains will not be running to London Bridge, Charing Cross or Cannon Street from 23 December to 1 January.

Network Rail's chief executive Mark Carne said most of the network is open for "business as usual" but some routes will be "heavily affected". He strongly advised passengers to plan ahead this Christmas. "We know that our railway is up to 50% quieter than usual during the festive period, so taking on and delivering these huge transformational schemes at this time of year minimises our impact on passengers."

Edit note: My own highlighting, intended for the particular attention of any of our 'planning train travel into / out of London this Christmas' GWR (Great Western Railway) readers.  CfN.  Wink

William Huskisson MP (Member of Parliament) was the first person to be killed by a train while crossing the tracks, in 1830.  Many more have died in the same way since then.  Don't take a chance: stop, look, listen.

"Level crossings are safe, unless they are used in an unsafe manner."  Discuss.

So is that no trains at all on 25th December and very VERY limited services in a few places on 26th - one of the really big days of the year for sporting events, sale starts and people visiting friends and relatives.

Oddly enough, Mark, if you don't run passenger trains on a couple of days, you will indeed find them quieter. It's known as "cause and effect" ...

No Southeastern Javelin on Boxing Day. Not sure about Gatwick services. Chilten running half hourly to Oxford Parkway from London via Bicester Village (who I suspect are sponsoring these) from 0800 to around 2000.

Not only do the Christmas ads seem to be incredibly early this year, so does the thread about the lack of Boxing Day services  Grin

Indeed, didcotdean!  Cheesy

I've therefore split off some subsequent posts, which discuss the lack of passenger train services on Boxing Day generally, and will merge them into an 'ongoing discussion' topic, from http://www.firstgreatwestern.info/coffeeshop/index.php?topic=4057.msg225294#msg225294 onwards.  Wink

Welcome to UnBoxing day. At the mid-point of the year - half way from one Christmas to the next - let us not forget the day the rail industry illustrates how people can travel to sporting fixtures and the sales with virtually no trains running.

I'm taking a day clear of the rails today - a lot of travel in the last few days, and more to come over the next days too. But I'm in a place that is both breathtaking and thought provoking ... see [here] - that page and the images that follow should be public viewable.
