There seems increasingly limited moral justification for discrimination against able bodied single travellers in the 30 to 59 age range who aren't able to purchase a loyalty card that suits them when any other age groups can buy such a card, or can travel at a reduced rate without a card.

We could do so much more on transport - efficiency and pricing of only we were more social.  We fight for buses to villages to nearby towns, and at the same time cars with empty seats are travelling from the village to the town every few minutes. And could we not form travel clubs that help three or more people come together on a groupsave ... or get a family card, and during the school holidays take a child who enjoys travel - helping him/her learn about the world beyond Didcot, or wherever you live?

Could there be legal grounds for a case of discrimination against 30-59 year olds I wonder?

No.

Age related concessions and discounts given by retailers and service providers are not classed as discriminatory under Section 4 of the Equality Act 2010 (Age Exceptions) Order 2012. That order makes reference to Section 29 of the main Equality Act 2010.

At my employer we currently have positive/affirmative policies for BAME, LGBT, Women, Disabled/assistive needs and Under 30s.

I've had some interesting discussions with colleagues about the impact of these policies and most (not just the white, straight, middle aged males) felt that better support, training and leadership generally would mean less need for these types of affirmative action.

It does feel a bit like the the railways where perhaps if there was a simpler, cheaper fair structure we wouldn't need all these different cards and tickets.

The 26-30 Railcard trial will come to an end later this year.

Don't worry though. It's being made permanent!

The new 26-30 railcard will go on sale before the end of the year - and this time it will be available to all four million eligible passengers, the rail industry has announced.

Launch has been delayed according to the BBC» (British Broadcasting Corporation - home page)

Quote
The launch of the new 26-30 railcard has been delayed slightly, it was announced on Friday.

Millennials had been promised they could buy the popular discount card by the end of 2018 - but now the launch date has been moved to 2 January.

It is only a delay of a few days, but for people turning 31 during this time it means missing out on large savings.
