Today’s Dorset Echo has the following
Southern route to Heathrow AND a coast route HS1 (High Speed line 1 - St Pancras to Channel Tunnel) to Exeter via Romsey, Salisbury and Crewkerne. It even mentions 3rd rail electrification.

http://www.dorsetecho.co.uk/news/16094016.boost-for-dorset-rail-travellers-as-two-multi-million-pound-rail-projects-unveiled/

In the 1840s similar schemes were put forward - Exeter Great Western for one.

You do have a far quicker route from Fareham to Romsey via Eastleigh - the line along the coast and through Southmapton wriggles.  Perhaps a chord at Eastleigh to allow trains to run via Botley and Southampton Airport and rather than wriggling into Central carry on to a terminus just ahead of the wriggle.   You could call it "Southampton Terminus".  The back out to Eastleigh and round via Chandlers Ford.

Oh - wait - did you say it is not 1st April??
