Our neighbour is going to Paington on 26th May from Paddington returning on 2 June  4 Adults out 5 back

They went to Paddington to book their tickets a little while ago not sure when theyt were sold singles (not advanced)  on the 12:33 with reservations but told they couldn't book for their return on 2 June.

Now it appears Advanced are available for both journeys.

Should they go to Padd and demand a refund on their outward tickets and buy advanced for both journeys.

Wasn't that the promise made when T12 was abandoned?

Yes it was, but it isn't that well published:

If people buy a ticket for a service affected by this change and then, at a later date advance tickets are made available which are at a cheaper fare, customers should book the advance fare for that service and then request a fee-free refund on their original ticket.

They went to Padd today. Still not able to buy tickets for the 13.08 Paignton Padd on Saturday 2nd June.

Paddington staff said to be very helpful but tickets not released yet.

What's happening that day?

Strange.

There are Advance tickets for the 11:00 (Change at Exeter St Davids) or the 13:26 (change at Newton Abbot).

The Berks & Hants route is closed from around 14:00 with services - including the latter of the two above - diverted via Melksham.

On Real Time Trains the train they plan to catch (1A84) is shown as also running via Melksham.  It has obviously been amended to cater for the engineering works so why tickets haven't been released I am not sure.
