It would seem that it is the New Track Construction Machine that has broken. It is a complex piece of kit, which lays the sleepers and guides the rails onto them.
It is possible that the part has to be brought in from the Manufacturer, hence the delay. A message from an informed source has gone to Roger Ford according to Twitter this morning.
It is also possible that they might complete the work today and not need next weekend...

05:33 Weymouth to Bristol Parkway due 08:23
05:33 Weymouth to Bristol Parkway due 08:23 will be started from Yeovil Pen Mill.
It will no longer call at Weymouth, Upwey, Dorchester West, Maiden Newton, Chetnole, Yetminster and Thornford.
This is due to engineering works not being finished on time.

The plan was to run two ecs moves from Westbury to Weymouth, at 4.34 and 5.30. In the end it seems that the first was cancelled and the second took both units, with one being dropped off at Yeovil to form the Parkway service. The other set going to Weymouth to form the Filton Abbey Wood service.
