I've even seen staff on Connect and GWR^▸ and SWR^» and NR^» (in orange) with their feet up on the opposite seats.

I doubt that we will ever know for certain, but to me it seems very unlikely that they had a first class ticket.

Most first class ticket holders, IME^▸ welcome the removal of standard class ticket holders and are therefore most unlikely to complain about such removal.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU^▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.
