For the many with no idea what 1C04 is...

0730 London Paddington to Penzance via Bristol Temple Meads.

Which later this month *may* become an IET (Intercity Express Train) service.

Set swaps don’t tend to occur anymore due to amount of stock and location of depots: so it is good to see that they continue to do them.

...eh?  They happen quite regularily at Plymouth....

I can confirm the possibility of an IET (Intercity Express Train) on this service as my ticket reservation was for coach J which, of course, does not exist on HST (High Speed Train) services.  This was corroborated by GWR (Great Western Railway) station staff at RDG(resolve) (Reading for those of you who don't know (don't want another telling off by Bignosemac with his sarcastic undertones  Wink )) and GWR's social media services.

All things being well, 1C04 WILL be an IET (or rather 2x5-car) from Monday, 20th August

As someone who has travelled up from Weston to Paddington recently with coach J reservations, I wouldn't get too excited just yet.

Your better off seeing an HST come round the corner as long as services running IET (Intercity Express Train) are more than likely to be just 5 carriages.

The forum is read by many. Including non-members for the public boards. Those of us with a wide knowledge of railway terminology, jargon, acronyms & abbreviations are able to understand the gist when such terminology is used. The wider public often can't. The coffeeshop isn't meant to be a talking shop just for those in the industry, wanting to be in the industry, or enthusiasts of the industry. It's open to all and is all the better for being so.

My reply to your opening post was neither a telling off nor was it sarcasm. It was a helpful explanation for this forum's wide audience of what the sparse thread title '1C04' referred to.

I have been, and probably will be again, just as guilty of using railway jargon without explanation. Its easy to slip into the shorthand for brevity. I do try to remember the wider audience though.

Whilst a little knowledge may not be a dangerous thing here, it can be off-putting.

For those of you wondering about the ps on BNM's last post.  The answers are TAU» (Taunton - next trains) (Taunton), SHH (Shirehampton) and Chard although I am puzzled as to why it needs 250 stations  Huh
