Ticket gate problem

I'd not encountered this one before until recently, thought it might be useful to mention it in case it happens to anyone else:

1) Ticket put in ticket gate
2) Ticket spat out of ticket gate with 'seek assistance'
3) Puzzled as rejected ticket is totally different to the one inserted
4) Explained to gateline staff member I must have picked up a discarded ticket by mistake instead of my outgoing portion (from the TVM^▸ ), I still had my return portion; let through without quibble

It dawned on me later, that someone else's ticket must have been ejected and mine was still in the machine (as I examined my tickets on the train and had both correct portions).
