Very sad. No details about the cause as yet. Many vehicles derailed, but they look largely intact suggesting a relatively modest speed.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

It's noticeable that the leading vehicle has overturned on the outside of a curve.

True, though that tells us nothing about why it came off, only that it was on a curve at the time. Any derailment at speed on a curve, whatever the cause, is almost certain to produce that effect.

Now reported that excess speed was a factor in the derailment.

AIUI (as I understand it), there was a c40mph curve on a c90mph route. The local equivalent of ATC (Automatic Train Control)/TPWS (Train Protection and Warning System) had been switched out as faulty, without failing the train. There may not have been effective approach control signalling, as would apply in the UK (United Kingdom).

Sometimes I think that NR» (Network Rail - home page)/DfT» (Department for Transport - about)/GWR (Great Western Railway) etc are wonderful.....

I thought that we had it at Reading before the rebuild on the down main (125) into 4 (50). We were never slowed when it was 80.
