Very sad. No details about the cause as yet. Many vehicles derailed, but they look largely intact suggesting a relatively modest speed.

True, though that tells us nothing about why it came off, only that it was on a curve at the time. Any derailment at speed on a curve, whatever the cause, is almost certain to produce that effect.

AIUI^▸ (as I understand it), there was a c40mph curve on a c90mph route. The local equivalent of ATC^▸ (Automatic Train Control)/TPWS^▸ (Train Protection and Warning System) had been switched out as faulty, without failing the train. There may not have been effective approach control signalling, as would apply in the UK^▸ (United Kingdom).

Sometimes I think that NR^» (Network Rail - home page)/DfT^» (Department for Transport - about)/GWR^▸ (Great Western Railway) etc are wonderful.....

...err.  where in the UK^▸ (United Kingdom) do we have approach control signalling for a curve in plain line?

I thought that we had it at Reading before the rebuild on the down main (125) into 4 (50). We were never slowed when it was 80.
