I was looking for a chart listing how many seats in each type of train .... "20,000 extra seats per day" already sound good (GWR (Great Western Railway) senior manager, Monday) but spread out over the network and multiple-counting the same seats for each train on the same diagram adds up.

So - please - how many actual seats in
A 5 car IET (Intercity Express Train)
A 9 car IET
An 8 car HST (High Speed Train)
A 4 car 387
A planned 4 car 769
A 3 car 166
A 2 car 165
A 3 car 158
A 2 car 150/2
A 1 car 153
I appreciate there are slight differences (such as high and low capacity HST, varied buffet setups, and there's a 158 3 car without a middle cab and there are 150/0s and so on, and I think one of the 150/2 units has 2+3 seating ...)

Purpose of question - when someone asks "what about x instead of y" working out what it would really mean!

Do you remember the Network RUS (Route Utilisation Strategy) report on rolling stock (2011)? Its appendix A gives the figures you are asking for (and more!), at least for those classes that existed then, and subject to refits since.

For 800s, just look at the inner end of a suitable driving carriage - if you don't happen to have one to hand, it says: 5-car 326* (last October, that was 315!) 9-car 647. For HSTs (High Speed Train), you probably have better sources anyway about the effect of the various styles and alterations.

*PS: according to the original published layouts, the numbers should be 315 and 627. How the one I saw earlier this month could come to have 11 more, I can't imagine!

A 5 car IET (Intercity Express Train) - 324
A 9 car IET - 647
An 8 car HST (High Speed Train) - 522 to 575 (depending on layout and whether composite carriage added to 2+7 formations)
A 4 car 387 - 224
A 3 car 166 - 264 (after Universal Access Toilet was fitted)
A 2 car 165 - 159 (latest layout, with Universal Access Toilet and bike rack)

Taken out loads of quoted there for clarity and looked up ...

A 2 car 158 - 124 - 142
A 3 car 158 - 208
Mk 3 carriage ... up to 76

So looking at Cardiff to Portsmouth ....
currently 3 car 158 ... 208 .. goes up to 165 + 166 (total 5 cars) ... 423

Suggestions of
... running a 5 car IET and it would only be up to 324
... castle class HST up to 304
so they would be a much lesser step up

And, I was told, Lancastrians.

It probably also counts as "423" in Horse Ferry Arithmetic.

I am particularly interested in the seating capacity of the Castle class HSTs (High Speed Train). Not sure how GWR (Great Western Railway) are reconfiguring the interiors of the coaches.


Anyone have a definitive answer?
