Ilfracombe ... is one of the closures in the few years up to about 1975 that I feel least comfortable with, together with the lines through from Yeoford to Bere Alston, from Oxford via Milton Keynes and Bedford to Cambridge, and from Taunton to Minehead. Having visited Barnstaple for a railway conference a couple of years back, the massive amount of work needed to get it back even from Barnstaple Junction to Barnstaple Town probably makes it one of those least likely to be put back.

A number of the later closures (Penrith-Keswick is another that comes to mind) were perfectly viable services that were axed for no other reason than that it was possible to 'replace' them with a bus service - something ontologists would refer to as a 'category error'. |

Linking to another thread, I hope 1X01 brings you what you're looking for tonight, and I share with you some more details of that train, courtesy of Chiltern Railways 4 December 2017 As we count down the days until Christmas, Chiltern Railways has unveiled the newest addition to its fleet – The Chiltern Santa Train which is believed to be the UK▸ ’s fastest sleigh. Led by Santa, the Chiltern Santa Train will fly down the track at 100 miles per hour and is the perfect way for Santa to deliver presents and transport customers with precious gifts between London Marylebone and Birmingham Moor Street. Conceived as part of Chiltern’s push for the UK to “Get Festive”, the company engaged specialist train sleigh makers, Charles Rayner LTD to install a magical vinyl ‘wrap’ of Santa’s sleigh on one of its silver trains. The train was transformed into a sleigh over a two-day period and will feature on the Chiltern line until after Christmas. Santa’s elves have also been recruited to bring Christmas cheer and will be helping customers at Chiltern stations. Other festive celebrations will include carolling at stations and Father Christmas taking his Santa Train on an adventure with specially selected families from Birmingham Children’s Hospital and Home-Start Banbury onboard for a day out in London on 16 December.
