As usual, no advice from GWR (Great Western Railway) as to what passengers should do.   I can remember back in BR (British Rail(ways)) times "We apologise that the xxxx from here to there is cancelled.   Passengers should catch xxxxxxx (whatever) "

Could have been a bit embarrassing ... "The 08:20 is cancelled. As the 10:30 is also cancelled, the next train to Melksham will be at 12:36".  Realistically, alternatives would have been provided if asked for, but by not offering the train company probably helps to suppress demand for what's going to be an inferior service from them, and which would cost them quite a bit to provide.  I am explaining, not condoning!

Further Information

I think the fault with the signalling system may have been the major axle counter system failure at Bristol TM(resolve) which stopped the job for a good two hours.  When I looked at OTT (Open Train Times website) maps during that failure a number of Porstsmouth-Cardiff trains were being held in the platforms at Westbury so perhaps there was no space for the TRANSWILTS service (or shortage of train crew due to the disruption).

07:33 Westbury to Swindon due 08:15 is being delayed between Westbury and Trowbridge and is now expected to be 3 minutes late.
This is due to a broken down train.

Previous train cancelled - although busy, the 07:04 Westbury to Swindon is followed by this 07:33 so people are only 30 minutes late.  A (further) three minute delay is just a shrug of the shoulders and with 90 mph stock on a 75mpt timed services (assuming a 16x or 158) time should be made up.

Just to note the 07:36 from London Paddington to Cheltenham Spa has also been cancelled in addition to the 07:04 from Westbury so that’s s big gap on the Golden Valley Line.

Very odd. The axle counters on platforms 1 & 2 at Swindon have failed which prevents any trains leaving those platforms and heading for Wootton Bassett Junction.

The incoming service on the TransWilts from Frome was crossed to the Down Main at Wootton Bassett junction and arrived on platform 4 just before 15:10.  Unfortunately it couldn’t stay there until 15:19 because of a service to Cardiff due in at 15:14.  So the 15:19 TW service set off at 15:15 to head to Chippenham.  Officially it was cancelled at Swindon but I wonder if anyone waiting for the train was allowed to board.

Not sure if they were cancelled (and then re-instated) because of the signalling problems at Swindon or the fire alarms going off at Westbury Panel causing the signallers to be evacuated for a short while.

Westbury panel issue.   They also diverted the 15:03 PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) tp PNZ via MKM» (Melksham (Station code) - next trains) ... 7 minute delay to the 16:37 MKM to SWI» (Swindon - next trains) which I am now on.

15:03 London Paddington to Penzance due 20:40 will no longer call at Pewsey.
This is due to the fire alarm sounding in the signalling centre.
