Don't anyone think the the TransWilts trains at the weekend are quiet ... as I am no longer the Community Rail Officer with a duty (and pass to cover it) to keep an eye on passenger numbers, and as the trains are now 2 carriages long and harder to watch, you don't see me mentioning numbers so much.   However, the 19:36 off Swindon last night carried around 30 passengers into Melksham.  About a dozen more got on there; about 8 got off.  So that's 42/20 under the old logging standard ... for a somewhat obscure mid evening train.

Here we go again ... first cancellation at Melksham in November ...

Quote
07:33 Westbury to Swindon due 08:20
07:33 Westbury to Swindon due 08:20 will be diverted between Trowbridge and Chippenham.
It will no longer call at Melksham.
It is being delayed between Trowbridge and Chippenham and is now expected to be 8 minutes late.
This is due to a points failure.

... lack of working trains, track, signal, staff ... usual theme of a service provider's responsibility (track or train)

October summary for Melksham (as submitted to TransWilts yesterday)

Quote
4.9% cancellation rate (has been as bad as 10% - should be 1.5% or less to be considered reliable)
89.2% ppm - doesn't look too bad BUT a very high proportion of cancellations in there!

but I also wrote

Quote
Yesterday, I looked at last week (now 2 to 8 days ago) in this log.
17 of the 26 cancellations for the month were in that week!
14 of those 16 cancellations were due to "a shortage of train crew"
With 119 trains scheduled in the week - that's a 14.3% cancellation rate

This is due to a fault with the signalling system.

No big deal

Saw "Swindon to Westbury" pop up on my screen and throught "oh no" ... but what's a few minutes?

I popped by Melksham Station to update the poster advertising the MRUG» (Melksham Rail User Group - site) meeting on 27th - happened to be there when the 14:04 arrived from Swindon.  Astonishing - around 20 people got off; 2 or 3 on.   Didn't look into the train, but on past form of two thirds being through traffic, must have been around 50 users - on what I expect to be just about the quietest middle of day service on a Sunday.
