Earlier this morning the 04:47 Hereford to London Paddington was diverted between Worcester Shrub Hill and Didcot Parkway due to a broken down train, missing out all the north Cotswold stops and Oxford.

and also:

Quote
06:51 Worcester Foregate Street to Didcot Parkway due 08:28 has been cancelled.
This is due to a fault on this train.

Whilst this autumn has been so much better than previous years, there has certainly been a noticeable deterioration of service in the last few weeks (and I do appreciate things like flooding are outside GWR (Great Western Railway)'s control).

Looks like a 19 car IET (Intercity Express Train) formation ran on the North Cotswolds early this morning.  Last night's 21:51 from Hereford (a 9-car) came to a stand at Shipton.   After efforts to get it moving failed an empty ten car was sent to haul it to Oxford and clear the line.

I was wondering whether I was seeing things this morning... it was sitting on the up relief (or whatever it's called) just north of North Oxford Junction at about 7.50am.

I'd definitely agree that the service has deteriorated over the past few weeks or so.  It's not just cancellations, it's the extremely poor punctuality.  A quick check with OnTime Trains shows that, for example, the 17.52 Paddington to Charlbury was on time exactly 0 percent of the time over the past four weeks.

Heavens. That's 11 (3+3+5) underfloor engines of 750hp each, totalling 8250hp. Shame they evidently weren't all operational...

Almost the longest possible now - that would be 5+5 towing the same. The requirement allows more, up to 24 vehicles, but that's not possible with only 5s and 9s in service. The towing train has to be allowable (1 or two units and no more than 12 vehicles), and can only tow something its own length or less.

A little filleting of this morning's "service":

Quote
04:47 Hereford to London Paddington due 07:52 will be reinstated.
It will be started from Oxford.
It will no longer call at Hereford, Ledbury, Colwall, Great Malvern, Malvern Link, Worcester Foregate Street, Worcester Shrub Hill, Pershore, Evesham, Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury and Hanborough.
This is due to a fault on this train.
Will be formed of 3 coaches instead of 9.

06:51 Worcester Foregate Street to Didcot Parkway due 08:28 will be started from Worcester Shrub Hill.
It will no longer call at Worcester Foregate Street.
This is due to a fault on this train.

07:10 Moreton-in-Marsh to London Paddington due 08:51 will be started from Oxford.
It will no longer call at Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury and Hanborough.
This is due to a fault on this train.

The regularity of cancellations and amendments due to train faults less than three weeks from the start of the new timetable is a little disconcerting.

Signalling problems between Didcot and Oxford:

Quote
12:22 London Paddington to Worcester Shrub Hill due 14:42 will be terminated at Reading.
It will no longer call at Oxford, Hanborough, Charlbury, Kingham, Moreton-in-Marsh, Honeybourne, Evesham, Pershore and Worcester Shrub Hill.
This is due to a fault with the signalling system.

so it's a case of switching to the 13:22...

Quote
13:22 London Paddington to Worcester Shrub Hill due 15:27 will call additionally at Honeybourne and Pershore.
This is due to a fault with the signalling system.
Will be formed of 5 coaches instead of 9.

and modified to add the resulting:

Quote
15:22 Worcester Shrub Hill to London Paddington due 17:28 will be started from Oxford.
It will no longer call at Worcester Shrub Hill, Evesham, Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury and Hanborough.
This is due to a fault with the signalling system.

Presumably a Down working was cancelled, or expired before reaching Worcester

Welcome to December.  Same as November.

Ahh yes ...

Looking at http://iris2.rail.co.uk/tiger/, which I trust far more than Journeycheck on such matters, a number of short-formations are running around the Cotswolds this afternoon/evening including:

1522 WOS» (Worcester Shrub Hill - next trains):PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains)
1622 PAD:GMV
1722 PAD:HFD» (Hereford - next trains)

and edit to add

1752 PAD:WOS

Journeycheck is now showing the full monty, so to speak!

07:10 Moreton-in-Marsh to London Paddington due 08:51 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train crew.

so sprint to station to catch earlier 05:28 HFD» (Hereford - next trains):PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains)

Quote
05:28 Hereford to London Paddington due 08:28 will call additionally at Kingham.
It has been previously delayed, has been further delayed at Charlbury and is now 18 minutes late.
This is due to the train making extra stops because a train was cancelled.

in fact, it was held at MIM until 07:10 to run to timings of the cancelled service.

18:29 Great Malvern to London Paddington due 21:05 will be terminated at Worcester Shrub Hill.
It will no longer call at Pershore, Evesham, Honeybourne, Moreton-in-Marsh, Kingham, Charlbury, Hanborough, Oxford, Reading, Slough and London Paddington.
This is due to train crew being delayed by service disruption.
