The fire was reported on the Manchester Piccadilly-Milford Haven service, Transport for Wales said, as it passed through Pontrilas, Herefordshire.

One witness said the train stopped shortly after 11.00 GMT, smoke was seen and passengers were asked to move carriages before getting out.

West Midlands Ambulance Service attended but no-one needed treatment.

Passenger Mike Robinson said: "The train stopped first and then it started to smoke and then the smoke just kind of got worse and worse...

"Then the staff kind of advised us to all move to carriage number one and then the fire brigade came and then the smoke just kind of continued for the next 30 minutes."

Apparently the same unit caught fire last year.  Don't have any other details.

To catch fire once may be regarded as a misfortune; to do so twice looks like carelessness...

The BBC report said that passengers had to jump down on to the trackside/cess.

Don't passenger trains carry ladders these days?

I guess there must be clauses in the contract between ToCs and ROSCOs about incidents such as this?   While the ROSCO owns the stock and therefore has a vested financial interest, it clearly has no part in the maintenance and operation of it.  In this case, I guess the damage will be repaired and the unit put back into service.  But in event of a vehicle being written off, things maybe start to get rather complicated?

I would guess there might be some insurance ... which involves some sort of forethought as to "what if ..."

And then there's the manufacturer, Alstom. As I understand it, the contract was to build and maintain the units.

That was kind of them.

Just as well that this was not their experimental hydrogen powered train.

The project could have imploded there and then. I'm sure there are adequate safety measures, and the good old fashioned diesel technology could prove to be the heart of the problem here.
