I've just got involved in a conversation at work about a colleague claiming refunds on his season ticket as he's been off sick. I had no idea you could do this. Is anyone aware of the circumstances in which you can do this? He's not a GWR season ticket holder but said it was part of the national terms and conditions.

I think most people don't have the time, inclination or knowledge to read the T&Cs for everything they buy or sign up for. How many people read EULAs when they install a piece of software?

This query came about because the train company were unaware of these conditions, argued against them and got it wrong claiming their T&Cs took precedence over the National one. Perhaps when they're clearly written, short and  in simple English I'd agree more.

I also think the train companies are missing a trick here as its very much a benefit of having a season ticket so why not promote it when people buy them?

I agree with that, but on the other hand, if someone finds themselves in the situation where they have had to stop using the season ticket suddenly, maybe there should be some more inclination to find out what the position might be, even if it's as simple as asking.

I'm not sure the additional information is the slightest bit relevant to my initial query and Grahame managed to answer it without the need for the snarky comments.

Please try and remember that not everyone has your knowledge of how railways operate, tickets are sold etc. It should be about making things easy, understanding where the vast majority of passengers are starting from as we're not all 'enthusiasts' and perhaps helping them? So far your contribution has been less than helpful.

I 'have to' come on and endorse that comment with more than just a 'like'.   This forum is very much intended to be a place to help find answers without the pedantics of having to start off with enough knowledge to get the question right.    In fact ... for Reading ... no - I'll tell you about that tomorrow in a different thread.
