Extra Train Each Hour Between Newcastle-Carlisle From May 2019

Northern has announced extra rail services between Carlisle and Newcastle.

As part of the May timetable switch, the rail operator will introduce an extra train each hour between the two cities, opening up new journey opportunities for customers on the route.

Anna Weeks, regional director at Northern, said: “We’re delighted to be able to strengthen the links between Newcastle and Carlisle – doubling the number of trains on weekdays and Saturdays and giving some stations on the route three trains per hour.

“The extra services provide excellent links along the line and will give our customers new commuting, business and leisure opportunities.”

I have often looked at that as a route of two halves ... with local stations remaining open in some numbers at the Newcastle end, but mostly gone at the Carlisle end.   From 1971/2:

Other improvements to Northern’s timetable include:

New hourly services between:
Chester and Leeds (via Manchester Victoria),
Sheffield and Gainsborough (including weekday services to Gainsborough Central)

Hourly services between:
Blackpool North and Manchester Airport (via Manchester Piccadilly),
Blackpool North and Hazel Grove (via Manchester Piccadilly),
Preston and Manchester Victoria,
Hull and Scarborough

Other improvements include:
A half hourly service between Newcastle and Carlisle (via the Tyne Valley),
Three trains per hour between Leeds and Harrogate (two stopping services and one semi-fast),
Improved journey times between Lincoln and Leeds

Isn't there already an hourly service between Blackpool North and Manchester Airport?  Albeit a few minutes slower than the service from May.
