Not a pleasant experience and hopefully not one that anyone will have to face here in the UK^▸ tomorrow;

At least the victims were allowed to get of the train and could take shelter from the sun in a nearby tunnel.
In contrast to the UK^▸ "keep them on the trains no matter what" policy.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU^▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Yes that does seem to be policy, though I have noted when there is a line problem near me at Hinton Admiral, trains are held at platforms, guessing to allow customers to alight, and be picked up by freinds etc.
