I think I am right in saying that Sheffield is the largest station that does not have ticket gates.

What do you think would be the cost of putting in a avoiding bridge to gain access to the tram stop?

and not needing to go through the station.

I don't think an underpass is an option.

I'd say York is bigger - but, yes, both big stations without gates.

A new bridge over the station to the tram stop would cost many millions, never mind the disruption to the train service while it went in.

A new bridge would require disabled access so would run into many millions

The former operator of the station, East Midlands Trains, wanted to install barriers a decade ago. Their plans were refused by Sheffield City Council.

Just seen the Northern Power house MP (Member of Parliament) has awarded 2 million pounds to improve facilities around the port area of Lydney.

Think if that money could be for the construction of a footbridge to the tram stop at sheffield.

Ticket gates could then be installed and it wouldn't take long to recoup that 2 million pounds.

Have you a link for that? I'd be interested to see what they plan to do there.

I'm sorry, but I'm totally lost by your point, Infoman.

What has Lydney Harbour getting Communities Coastal Fund money got to do with Sheffield Station getting, or not getting, another footbridge?

The whole topic of gating Sheffield station seems rather out of area as well.  I know we do cover the wider picture and Cross Country services, but it feels a particularly local topic to that area given the reasons why it hasn't happened, which doesn't seem to have much relevance to us.

I don't think there's any question of 2 million pounds being moved from one project (a gateline and / or another bridge at Sheffield) to dredging at Lydney, at the expense of Sheffield ... so really no correlation.  They may come under the same minister at the DfT» (Department for Transport - about) (I would need to check my facts) but that's about it.

This board is labelled "Cross Country SERVICES".  They are an oddball franchise as they don't look after any passenger stations at all ... and I do think it's fair game within this board to talk of the facilities at the various stations where the have what I will describe as "squatter's rights", especially where those stations have through services they operate to / from GWR (Great Western Railway) land.

The reason I mentioned about Lydney docks/port,
was the minister for the northern power house as well as rural affairs stated this award of money to Lydney would improve things for Lydney port/docks.
The guy I was talking about who use's his boat on the Bristol Channel, says he would not go any where near Lydney area due to the waters being too  treacherous.
I have this awful thought that the 2 million pounds will be spent on the docks area and no one will benifit.
Now if 2 million pounds was spent on Sheffield station to install ticket gates, along with the bridge that would be something different.
Just think how much money would be re-couped considering that large towns like Barnsley Chesterfield Rotherham and Doncaster don't have ticket gates
not to mention Meadowhall.
Might make a visit to Lydney docks to see how many leisure boats are actually moored there.

Northern Powerhouse and Rural Affairs are separate, so it seems a bit absurd to suggest that nothing can be spent on Rural Affairs if there's a better use for the money in Northern Powerhouse, simply because the same minister is involved.

Though I agree with you that I am sceptical as to the value of trying to encourage Lydney port for the reason you give.

I don't think an underpass is an option.

Don't know about largest/busiest station but it's big and indeed it does not have ticket gates.

The bridge is indeed a thoroughfare between the city, the tram stop and the area beyond and yes, the city counccil refused the gating. The bridge is too narrow for a solution like there used to be at Reading, with the bridge split in half.

I'd presume that Northern try to deal with this by having lots of ticket people at busy times, though I can't remember ever having been stopped, and indeed, there is probably a fairly high level of fare dodging.

Don't forget that Sheffield station is planned to have a fairly heavy rebuild as part of HS2 (The next High Speed line(s))/NPR, with plans under development at the moment. I suspect that will resolve the footbridge issue
