Brilliant, we've organised a 40th birthday trip for my good lady's son to Miniatur Wunderland/Hamburg in a few days time and it's right by there where he's staying. I'm going to email him the clip, he's going to want a go on that!

Don't share this too widely, else somebody will put it forward as an alternative to the Portishead reopening.

Is this serious, or some elaborate hoax/joke ?

Does not look very safe to me.
Water line was very close to the windows, the entirely foreseeable mishap of a broken window could allow in enough water to swamp the vessel.
No obvious quick way to exit in case of emergency.
Surely life preservers would be needed for all on board, no sign of same.
No life raft seen, a requirement even in sheltered waters.

Contrast to the "duck tours" amphibious vehicles used in London. One of these caught fire, everyone escaped.

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards, luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

The Hamburg Harbour ferries do have a buffet, or at least they did last time I was on one. There was even someone coming out on deck taking orders from passengers.

Travel tip: The harbour ferries are a cheap way of touring the Port of Hamburg. They are part of the Hamburg transport network (along with bus, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, ANB etc) and so day and multi day travel tickets are valid on them (but not on the official harbour tours off course).

At least one ferry route is circular, covering of a big chunk of the harbour and it's very nice on a sunny day to do a circuit or two sat on deck ordering a beer which is brought to you.

Okay, so there's no commentary but a tourist booklet could adequetely substitute.

There are plenty of articles on-line about the Hafen City Riverbus. The footage was filmed just before it entered service so some of the safety equipment may not have been fully fitted out....or else it's there but unobtrusive/unobstructive.

He'll enjoy Miniatur Wunderland. I'm going back again next month. It's a shame the Riverbus doesn't start till next year, I would have enjoyed a trip on that.

Thanks for the tip. I didn't know the ferries were part of the transport network so I will try and take a ride this time.

From the clip, which I think was more than a year ago, it could be running now. Was at Miniatur Wunderland in 2007 and it was brilliant then, love Hamburg, know it well as I've been going there since a babe in arms longer ago than I care to mention. Have a good time there.... I am confident you will!

Edit: Check out the Hamburg.de website for the link to the transport website to confirm if the ferries are still part of the deal. I cannot think why they would not be.
