No great surprises there, but what were cause and effect - was the rail service lost because the areas weren't performing well, or did the areas cease to perform well because of the rail services being lost? Asking another similar question, isn't it natural that growth in more recent times has been in places where transport if in place to support that growth?

Indeed. Though I note that the "blame" on their being no buses seems to be based on the thought that buses don't run in the evening even if trains do!

We've always lived in a society divided between haves and have-nots.  Even in the days of far more universal rail transport, J B Priestley wrote English Journey in 1933, and George Orwell came along soon afterwards with Road to Wigan Pier

I have doubts as to whether any form of either communitarism or red-in-tooth-and-claw capitalism has the complete answers to inequality.  I'm also quite sure that authoritarian ("top-down") systems don't have answers, either.  However superficially attractive they might appear.

I'd say both. Services are cut because of low demand, the lack of services means that people and businesses and institutions (for lack of a better word) which would use those services, go elsewhere instead.

I thought the paragraphs about the "London-nodalism" enhanced by the cuts were significant too, both in transport, economic and demographic terms and (in the context of Brexit) in contributing to the idea of the "metropolitan elite".
