From the Salisbury Journal

Quote
THOUSANDS of low-cost train tickets are now available as Wiltshire operator Great Western Railway launches its January sale.

Promotional fares are available to buy from tomorrow, January 16, until January 26.

However, tickets must be for travel between January 23 and April 3.

A spokesman said: “Trains can be booked now to take advantage of the cheapest fares and get even more off of the cost of advance purchase fares for travel across the Great Western network.

"It covers hundreds of the country’s leading destinations”

Quoting from my inbox - following written by GWR (Great Western Railway) via TransWilts, so very much a local quote:

Quote
The following are the Advance purchase Jan Sale fares from Melksham:
• Exeter St. Davids £5
• London Paddington £10
• Reading £5
• Salisbury £10
• Portsmouth Harbour £5
• Southampton Central £5
• Cardiff Central £5

Sale details:

*     16 - 26 Jan on sale (for travel between 23 Jan - 3 Apr)
*     Available on Advance Single fares
*     Only available through GWR.com/sale or through the GWR app

Just checking ... these tickets do not appear to be further discounted by railcards, and do not appear to offer group save - I guess at a tenner Melksham to London - 10p per mile - what do you expect?  Still good value if they work for you - and there appear to be plenty available on a random midweek to midweek round trip I tried for next month. Note this screen capture is for three adults (as I wanted to have group save in the test)

This test also emphasises the headline price differences between open anytime returns and other tickets ... drill down and you find full "any permitted" rather than "via Swindon" and first class even more expensive.

How utterly good is the advise to choose a ticket to suite your needs.

Thanks, interesting. If you take the OXF» (Oxford - next trains) - PAD» (Paddington (London) - next trains) for £5.00 and amend it to RDG(resolve) - PAD the price is £21.00 at the same time. So do you save by buying a ticket to Oxford but get on at Reading?

I would suspect that usual advance fare conditions apply - ticket only valid for complete ticketed journey.  No getting on late or off early.  I do stand to be corrected on that - it's just an educated guess.  Pragatically, should you feel unwell during your journey and get off early, I would be surprised if you weren't allowed out of the station ...

The GWR (Great Western Railway) January Sale is available on Advance fares only. These must be bought at least 7 days before you travel and are non-refundable. These fares are valid for your booked journey only.

Advance fare rules therefore apply. point-to-point, no break of journey.

I've just spent a lot on a ticket that wasn't in the promotional list but it wasn't clear if I get the additional Nectar points. The email implied it was all purchases in this period rather just promotional fares but i didn't get the extra points.

Edit:

Buried in the small print which you have to open up to actually read. Pity as I've never actually seen a promotion on a journey I make.

"5. 5x Nectar bonus offer is available on promotional tickets purchased via GWR (Great Western Railway).com/sale and the GWR app. "

Try doing a split ticket. I couldn't get one Liskeard -Pad for the times I wanted , but could get £5 Advance 1st LSK-Exeter, then £15 Exeter-Pad on same train. Bargain!
