A quick question about ticketing conditions for journeys that go via London.

I've often travelled from Bath to destinations that involve crossing London from Paddington to catch a train from another London terminus. These tickets always allow for use of the underground between Paddington and the other terminus, but I have normally taken my Brompton and cycled that part of the journey, so have only occasionally had to use my ticket on the underground bit of the journey.

Recently I made a journey that involved me going from Paddington to Victoria to catch another train from there. However, I wanted to break my journey within London for the day, which I obviously could easily have done at either Paddington or Victoria. However, I wanted to make the break at Kensington, along the underground part of the journey, and found that my ticket wouldn't open the barriers there, and was told by the station staff at the barrier that a break in journey wasn't allowed with a rail ticket there.

Can someone let me know if that is the case?

Yes, that is correct. Cross London (Maltese cross) tickets are valid for a single unbroken journey between a defined list of a London interchange stations. (counting a return as 2 tickets, 2 journeys).  South Ken, West Ken and High Street Ken are unlikely to be in the list, not sure about Ken Olympia.

Reading the link, it implies that you should be able to get out at Olympia but not get back on again. Its a little ambiguous in that it could be read to mean you can leave at any Underground station on a 'reasonable' route between the two London termini.

Not sure it's at all ambiguous....

You can ‘break your transfer journey' and leave the Underground at any intermediate station, e.g. if you are travelling between Victoria and Euston you can exit at Oxford Circus. However, if you subsequently wish to continue your journey by Underground you will have to purchase another ticket.

So yes, you should be able to exit as the OP (Original Poster / topic starter) wants to by using cicle line westbound at Pad to Victoria breaking at South Ken but not West Ken or Olympia (off route)

Interesting. I tried to exit at High Street Ken which is on route but the barrier wouldn't accept my ticket.

Proabably set to refuse in order that you could be route-checked (and likely warned that you couldn't continue your journey to Victoria without buying a tube ticket)
