From the Bristol PostCommuters at a railway station in Bristol are getting used to sharing the platform while waiting for their trains - with a brood of chickens.
Bemused rail passengers getting on and off trains at Montpelier station, in the heart of inner-city Bristol, have been taking pictures and wondering why the facilities on the single platform include half a dozen hens, casually rooting around in the undergrowth. A famous Yorkshire railway station cat has now got her own apprentice.
Felix, who can be found patrolling Huddersfield Station, has recently been joined by Bolt. Any others you know of? Cheetahs at Chessington South? Seals at Kyle of Lochalsh? |

When I took my daughter to Mallaig last June, she was fascinated by the number of Gulls nesting between the tracks of the sidings - several sitting on eggs and others actually with youngsters. I guess that - with Mallaig being a fishing port - this is hardly surprising. |

Apparently they want to catch a train to Henbury, but thanks to the sustainable transport budget being chicken-feed they'll be waiting till the cows come home. |

We don't have any farmstock being kept at Oldfield Park, though the embankment garden could be an ideal place for chickens to be left on the run (thinks, there's an idea...).
However, I am always amazed at how many apples are left to rot there, when so many passengers stand right by the trees and then, no doubt, go to buy their apples somewhere in town.

Probably swans at Gloucester, Worcester, Chepstow and other stations close to the Wye and Severn just at the moment. Dolphins just east of Slough. |

Unfortunately, it seems that Percy the Okehampton Station cat has been found alternative accommodation during the recent uncertainty at the Dartmoor Railway.
I did see a snail at Redland Station recently though!

The people probably think that apples from trees are unhygienic, due to the proximity of birds and insects. Proper apples come in plastic packs from Tesco. |

A proper intercity train has a minimum of 8 coaches, gangwayed throughout, with first at one end, and a full sized buffet car between first and standard.
It has space for cycles, surfboards,luggage etc.
A 5 car DMU▸ is not a proper inter-city train. The 5+5 and 9 car DMUs are almost as bad.

Undoubtedly, but I suspect most just don't see them at all, despite them being piled up right on the platform edge, as they are too busy staring at their phones. |

In our part of the world, there are rookeries alongside platform 4 at Tilehurst and platform 1 at Goring & Streatley.
My bird list from the train over the years includes both Peregines and Curlew flying alongside trains coming into Reading, Little Egrets feeding in the Blackwater near Sandhurst and Barn Owl near Gatehampton Bridge.
Reading used to have Starlings before it was rebuilt, that often fed between the tracks on the old platforms 4A and B. Guildford also still has them. They seem to breed in the roof of Ranger House next to Platform 2. However I have seen the slightly gruesome sight of crows picking off the young just after they have left the nest on the platform.
I have also seen Peregrines at both Guildford and Reading Stations. They don't seem to have had any effect on the pigeon problem at the latter where some aspects of the new roof design seem to encourage pigeons to nest.
Plenty to see if you keep your eyes open (and off your screen !)
